Hi lost my cat aged 16 three years ago anyway got a kitten 5 months ago had him neutered when old enough but what I can't stand is his smell as soon as he uses the litter tray the whole house knows about it , is it normal ? I've never know a cat smell so much he's been like this from day one , I took a sample to vets that was all ok , I've just took on another kitten feral and he isn't done yet as not old enough but he doesn't smell help ?

Hey! My cat doesn't have bad smelling leavings, only occasionally. It could be caused by what type of food he eats. The food may not agree with his body perhaps. It may just be his normal self though. Some cats may just have that. (Sorry if this isn't the best, not too familiar with the problem, but it could be his meals?)

If you're feeding him anything with grain in it, or cheap kibble, that usually contributes to litter box smell. Cats can't digest grain well, so it tends to smell terrible when they use the restroom. I've had cats on kibble and they could clear a room!

My cats now are on wet and freeze dried raw and I can't even smell their litter box when i'm in the same room. It's pretty awesome.

How old is your kitty, and is he still on kitten food?  Foods high in protein will cause stinky poop and kitten food does have a higher protein to facilitate growth. If he is a year old, you might want to start to slowly transition him over to adult food. This could take about a week, so be prepared for a few more stink-outs, then see if that changes anything.

I had to change food for my Boys a couple times when they started on adult food because when they would poop, a heavy green fog would follow them out of the bathroom! The shelter loved me for a few months because I kept donating bags of food that made them stink!

You said he has been vetted, so I would rule out worms or other intestinal parasites, as I will assume he was dewormed.

Keep us posted as to how he is doing or if things worsen!

And you are certain he doesn't have any parasites?  Are his stools normal...no diarrhea or loose stools?

Maybe try a different litter.  I swear some litters are much worse at others in odor control.  What kind are you using?

Catzan litter but other cat doesn't smell like him so not sure it would be litter I've been and bought different food swapping over slowly so fingers crossed the changing the tray every time he goes wee or poop will be a thing of the past lol

Oh dear.  I know it is a real problem, but I just had to giggle a little...I kept thinking of that old episode of "Friends," when Phoebe is singing, "smelly cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you?  Smelly cat, smelly cat, it's not your fault!"

About the only thing you can do, since his vet workups were normal, is keep experimenting with different foods and litters.  There are some litters that are much better at odor control than others, and even it the other cat doesn't need it, this one might.  Let's be very frank...not all humans leave their "litter boxes" smelling the same.  Some are just more...potent...than others.

Just don't inhale too deeply while you giggle.  And, seriously, best of luck...Keep trying different things.  You'll find something that helps, whether a different food or a different litter.

I know you're already feeding a grain-free food, but not all grain-free foods are created equal.  I know Wellness made my kitty's poops stink to high heaven!  So keep trying different varieties until you find something that works.  Just remember to gradually change any dry food.

Applaws dry makes my kitties stink like nothing else sadly. They smell much less on Hills Ideal Balance Kitten (which sadly isn't grain free, but it only has rice). Some grain free foods can be a bit much for some cats systems too. My 2 year old Maine Coon gets smelly every time I put him on grain free dry, he seems to need a small amount of grain in there to keep things less stinky. Certain wet foods make them really bad too.

Another thing is you said you're using Catzan litter? Is that the clumping clay one? We have one in Australia called Catsan clumping clay and it seems to smell like poop as soon as they use it and stays smelling that way no matter what I do which is bizarre. I've had much more luck with natural litters (one made from rice by product and one made from a kind of sawdust). It seems to cover the poop well and doesn't get that poopy smell that the catsan used to.
