I went to visit with Rick's sister and BIL yesterday. I learned how to make sauerkraut, shredding the cabbage, salting and tamping and tamping and tamping. And then tamping some more. We filled an 8-gallon crock with the cabbage; he figures it will be ready around the middle of February. Rick came up later and joined us for supper.

Well, he gave me his first smoker! I've been looking at smokers forever and have wanted one at least that long. He has a huge Brinkmann smoker (that he did the pulled pork in yesterday) and he is building a small smokehouse on their property that I can also use. So he's had this small electric smoker that he's not using anymore and it is now in our basement. I've been perusing the owner's manual and some recipes for smoking different things. I'd love to smoke our Thanksgiving turkey and, if we get a smaller one instead of the 20+ pounder that we usually get, I might try to smoke the thing. I'll have to put it outside on the deck to use it, but that should be fine.

I'm really excited to try it!

I've seen smokers on TV and they seem to cook the meats really good and they look really tasty.  Good luck with it Pam and let us know how you like the food after using it.

I love smoked meats.  I am originally from Kansas and the speciality there is brisket and burnt ends, I haven't had a good brisket in a very long time.  I like the other smoked meats as well.

My cousin's husband is the king of deals.  He found smokers at a great price several years ago and bought one for his parents and one for himself.  He is also the king of meats.  I swear hes got the golden touch when it comes to grilling and smoking!  He smoked 2 beef roasts for a family dinner a couple years ago.  It was amazing.  I mean convert a vegetarian amazing.
I had never considered getting one before; but now I could see myself getting use out of that!  (I'm also really hungry just thinking about it!

Please let us know how it goes for you!!

Lucky You!!!  I want one!!! Have fun with it!

Worst case scenario, get 2 smaller turkeys. One smoked and the other roasted. They make great leftovers that I have no doubt you'd put to good use.

We've had smoked turkey for two Thanksgivings in a row, and boy oh boy were they good! Totally recommend it. Not that I cooked it myself though, and the guy who did had to get up a 5am to start the last one. Yeah....don't think I'll be doing that myself anytime soon! :lol3:
