I had my cats when they were 2 months age and they were covering their land mines just fine, by the time and as they grow up, the male one started scratching the sides of the litter box instead of covering his things, and a while after the female started to do so, now they are about one year and had one kitten, as she started using the letter box she is acting like her mother -_- and that drives me crazy, now both adults scratch the sides of the litter box and the kitten is acting the same, how can I make them cover their things??

A few questions to help getting suggestions.

What type of litter are you using?

How often do you clean the boxes?

How many boxes do you have?

How big are the boxes?

Sadly, some cats just aren't very good at covering their poop. My girl is just the same as your guys are - scratches everywhere BUT the litter  It's just the way some cats are. Look on it as an extra reminder to scoop frequently ;)

On another note - please, please get your cats spayed/neutered as soon as possible. They'll be happier and healthier for it, and easier to live with too :catguy:

But my cats were just good as they were kittens, by the way you mentioned the spaying/neutering thing, do that really make them happier?! I mean, what kind of creature gets happy when you remove its testicles, does that effect the behavior of the cat? The are Already acting lazy and wrinkly and almost stopped playing and being active (that only changes when the mother plays with her kitten).

I have found with Tempest and Sinbad that as their trust level and feelings of safety go up, their need to cover their waste goes down. Sinbad used to obsessively spray sand around and carefully sniff check to make sure there was no remaining smells every time he went, now he just saunters in, does his business, then wanders out without a care in the world. Tempest is funny though, she climbs onto the rim to use her box, and then reaches down with one foot to carefully cover.
Although as I noted, she is coming to care less and less as well about covering hers. Currently her concern seems to be governed by how recently they have had a spat.

Could it be that your kitties just feel safe in your house so aren't worried that smells will attract predators?

They're happier after being spayed/neutered because they aren't being ruled by raging hormones. It's no fun to be getting all kinds of urges and get frustrated because you can't act on them, and it's not healthy for females to have pregnancies close together - another big risk if they don't have their ops.

My male cat often likes to scratch like floor and wall around the litterbox after covering his poop in the litterbox. Sometimes my female cat would scratch the sides of the litterbox but not cover her poop. I found that using a larger litterbox and filling it higher with litter seems to help. My male cat is very long and tall and I think he prefers to have more space to dig in the box. Sometimes using a plastic storage tote (like the kind for underbed storage) works better than actual litterboxes since so many of them are so low to the ground they can't be filled up as high. It really depends on the size of the cat. But for bigger cats I've found that having a litter box where the sides are a little higher and filling it up higher does work very well.

Well, working by your advice I have replaced the letter box with a bigger one, and it worked pretty good with the female, she's always been smart and clean, however, the male was always such and idiot and I wasn't surprised he still ain't gonna cover his nuclear bombs, so I am not very disappointed , the problem is the kitten still scratch the sides and no covering, hope she learns from her mother the right way as she learned the wrong, thanks for your advice!

The mother can get pregnant again very soon after delivery and the father will be able impregnate his kitten. It's much safer for all if they are fixed.
