I took my male Snowshoe kitten (5 months) to be neutered 3 1/2 weeks ago (Sept 30). They said one of his testi's hadn't dropped and had to do a more invasive surgery to remove it from next to the bladder. While there, he was also given PureVax Rabies, Non-adjuvanted Leukemia vaccine, Frontal dewormer, Buprenex pain medication, & a Revolution Blue (they said all this was standard, but also cost me $1000!!)
He was miserable and drowsy for the 1st 24 hours & wouldn't eat or drink and kept extending his neck and couldn't swallow comfortably. I called the vet who said it was normal, give him some time. Another 24 hours later the same sick kitty that tried to drink but couldn't swallow, and started crying with a very hoarse, raspy, faint cry...same answer from the vet. Day 3 I drove him to over there and made them look at him. He wouldnt eat, barely drink, couldn't swallow, and now had no voice. They said he was dehydrated & gave him fluids via IV, then said he just needed stronger pain meds & wanted to give him a shot that I refused. Took him home a little happier, finally got him to drink a little tiny bit, but could barely swallow. Day 5 after the surgery (2 days after his IV) he was back to no food/water, lethargic, did not feel warm to the touch, but obviously miserable. Took him to the animal hospital near me for a 2nd opinion.
They said he may have a scraped esophogus from the oxygen tube used during surgery that may have gotten infected & caused laryngitis. Gave me 15mL Clavamox which I gave him completely. He started eating, drinking, playing a little & seemed to be getting better. 2 days after being off the Clavamox, he started losing fur on his right ear. Several days after being off the meds (Mon.Oct 19), his ear has patches of fur missing and more importantly I hear him gagging lime he is going to throw up. I run over to check on him and he would gag like before coughing up a hairball, then when he tried to breathe in the was making a deep growling noise like he couldn't inhale. I rushed him to the animal hospital and he threw up his breakfast in the car, but kept gagging and couldn't catch his breath. They looked in his ears, took his temp (never looked in his nose or throat) and said he doesn't have a fever, but took him back for xrays to see if he was choking on anything. "Xrays showed no sign of foreign object but he has a lot of fluid in his lungs and sinus cavity. We think he has Aspiration Pneumonia" They gave him a Convenia Injection, said his hair loss on the ear was probably just from stress, and sent us home. I watched him closely all day and kept him with me on my bed. By dinner time his wheezing had eased significantly and he ate a little. Tuesday was moving around more, very faint wheezing, appetite back to normal. Weds, checkup at Dr#1 for his Neuter and 2nd round of vaccines for some reason. I told them anout the past 2weeks. They said his breathing was normal, temp normal, and it was probably just an upper respiratory infection - no to worry, its a kitty cold, and its definitely not from the surgery or vaccines. They also scraped his ear to check for ringworm & mange and said they'll call me when the results come in but it'll take 16 days?!?!). It is now Saturday and he has progressively gotten slower moving, more mopey/tired, and just looks miserable over the past 3 days. I don't trust either Vet office to touch him ever again, and am so worried about my poor little guy. I've had him since he was 4days old found lying half dead on a boat dock. Could the vaccines be doing this, or the oxygen tube, possible pneumonia, or are both Dr's too ignorant to realize and it may be something more severe? I don't know what to do, I don't trust these vets, and #1has already charged me $1500 and #2 $800...I can't keep wasting thousands of dollars and no one will help him - they just keep telling me it's normal, but I've had cats all my life, have 3 (the sick one, another 4month rescue, & a 12 yr rescue that I've had since she was 3 days old also) I have never had a Cat react like this and I KNOW its not "normal". Please advise on how to help him?

I don't understand giving vaccines to a kitty that isn't completely healthy even if all they have is a kitty cold.  Do you have other vets in the area that you could take your kitty to?  I don't know what is going on, if it's one thing that is the issue or a series of things going on.  He is eating normally which is certainly a good sign but he does need to be seen.

I sure wish I could tell you something to do that would help. I had to nurture my cats with hand feeding and lots of attention which they appear to enjoy when feeling sick (like some of us).

It is good that he is eating and drinking. You may have to observe him for some time and ensure that he is urinating without any problems.

I have been in your situation with three of my cats(lots of money to Vets), no improvement and always some other diagnosis.

But it seems that they just gave him too many things at once, which is what happened to my little purry friend.

I had an excellent Vet who was very caring and honest with her diagnosis, but she moved out of my area. It seems some Vets would never admit what they did could be the problem and assist you, because then they can not charge you additional fees.

I had a Vet Tech gave me confidential information on what to do and not take my cat back to the Vet.

I spent the money instead on various foods until I got one that they would eat that had a lot of moisture.

Good luck with your feline friend.
