Hi everyone, does anyone have any experience with anemia?
My cat survived going into shock two weeks ago with severe anemia after a blood transfusion. None of the vets thought he would live through that weekend, but two weeks later and here he is. Our new vet thinks a bleeding ulcer that stopped bleeding was the culprit, based on Burt's history of gastro issues (vomiting, and very bad constipation) and the fact that he improved and maintained so well after his transfusion.
He just got follow up bloodwork done and his RBC has gone down to 18 from 20 when he left the hospital. This vet didn't feel any fluid anywhere and he hasn't vomited or pooped blood, but still a decline in RBC. Could this mean he is still bleeding? If he was still bleeding wouldn't his RBC be worse? Burt also has a "giant" liver, but his enzymes came back fine. The vet doesn't think it could be parasites but I want to get him checked anyway. His WBC is still high at 37,000 but it actually went down from the 43,000 it was before he went into shock. He also has low blood protein. He said their were tons of diagnostics that we could do that would be rough on Burt and he said to just keep doing what we are doing because it's obviously working as Burt does still have some quality of life (enjoying his comfy spots, excited about food, though he is having difficulty eating).
Are there any middle of the road diagnostics that wouldn't be super traumatic for him? How much danger is he in at 18 RBC?
In my research I've read that some cats after going into shock just need more than one blood transfusion to get through having gone into shock regardless of whether they are still bleeding or not. Does anyone have experience with something like that? Any input on this subject would just be so helpful.
Also, something that just occurred to me. About two months ago, when Burt was still his normal self, our kitchen sink started backing up with all of whatever my downstairs neighbor had put in her sink. It completely flooded our apartment, and the cats where all covered in whatever the hell the sink stuff was (it was bright red, like tomato sauce). We bathed everyone who had it on them, Burt didn't seem to have anything on him. He didn't start presenting with issues until a month later, but could that have done this to him?
Right now Burt is on Prilosec, carafate, cerenia, Pet Tabs Iron Plus, and he is supposed to be on Baytril but I stopped giving it to him after he went into shock because I was afraid it would start him throwing up.
I feel like I'm falling apart. Burt is my best friend of almost 16 years and I just want to try to get him through this if I can. My boy wants to live and I want to help him do it. Any guidance or tips would truly mean the world to us. Thank you.
