Hello all, I am brand new to The Cat Site and made an account specifically to ask for advice from other cat owners. It seems like a wonderful community here.

My question is about my cat, he is almost 15 years old. Last week he started vomiting and having diarrhea which he almost never has. He also refused to drink any water and only ate sparingly. I started to worry and scheduled an appointment with my vet. They took a look at him and even ran a blood test. Everything came back completely normal, but they gave me some medication to give to him for the next few days to help with his vomiting and diarrhea. He didn't like the medication but since then he has gotten better and stopped vomiting etc. He still wouldn't drink any water, so in an attempt to keep him hydrated I started putting extra fresh water in his canned food that he eats twice a day. I was so pleased to see that it worked and he would drink pretty large amounts of water if I put it into his food! Everything was starting to look better until today. I gave him his food as normal but he wouldn't eat it. He looked and it and smelled it and even lapped up a very small amount of it, like maybe a bite or two, but then he turned away and seemed almost repulsed by it. His stomach started growling/making loud noises as well. No matter what I did today, he wouldn't eat or drink. Is this a bad sign? Maybe I'm overthinking things since this is the first time he's flat out refused his food; maybe he just isn't hungry. But I do worry, given his age and whatnot. He is the first cat I've ever owned, I got him when I was 3 years old, I'm 17 now. That's why I wanted to ask my question here, since I see there are a LOT of very experienced cat owners who have dealt with cats both young and old.

Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this!

Hi and welcome to the site

Has he refused food all day? Is this the same food he always has?

If so I would definitely take him to the vet again ASAP.  It is not normal for a cat not to eat, and they can go downhill very quickly when they don't eat... unlike humans and many other mammals they really can't go long without food. If you can't get him to the vet  right away, you may want to try force feeding him.  This is less scary than it sounds and involves getting a feeding syringe (sold at most stores like CVS/Walgreens/Walmart in the USA, often in the baby section) and mixing wet food with water till it has a thin consistency, and then putting the syringe into the cat's cheek and administering small amounts at once.  Let us know if you do end up needing more information on how to do this.

Good luck and I am sorry your boy is having troubles.  Please keep us updated.

When my cat is having problems passing a hairball her stomach starts rumbling. Do you have any hairball remedy? It is very promising that the blood work is good but a return visit to the vet is needed because he is older. Also did the vet check his teeth? Does his breath smell normal?

A call to the vet is always a good place to start. On the eating part I've found baby food, turkey or chicken (make sure there aren't added spices. I think it's stage 1) to be helpful in getting them to eat, it is also a good thing to use if you need to syringe feed them.

So sorry you are having to go through this. You and your kitty are very lucky to have found each other and it sounds like he has had lots of love growing up with you. :hugs:

Wow thank you so much for the super informative reply! That sounds like a wonderful idea! I am going to attempt to feed him his regular food again tonight but if it doesn't work, I think I'll check out syringes. I will keep updating! Thank you again for replying

Hi, and thank you for replying! I do have hairball remedy, I think that might be a great idea since he is a long haired cat and has had hairballs before. He seems to be acting normally but I definitely would rather be safe than sorry so if he continues refusing food I will call the vet again.

Also yes the vet checked his teeth and everything checked out. It's so strange that cats can be possibly sick but show no symptoms! It makes me worry a bit haha

Great idea! I never thought about giving my cats baby food before! If he refuses his food tonight I will look into buying some baby food for him to try, as well as syringes.

& thank you very much for the kind words.
He really is the best animal I've ever met, I feel so blessed to have him in my life. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

Just wanted everyone to know that he ate his dinner tonight!! I'm very pleased, but it looks like you can never be too sure with cats so I wrote down all the suggestions I was given here. I want to thank everyone that commented so much for their help and advice. This site has a wonderful community with amazing people! Thank you for everything!
