Hi, I'm relatively new to this site and was hoping someone out there knows something about the use of ear solution.

I live in Mexico and the vet prescribed a solution with some small antibiotic pills for my 14 month old cat, Tito, who has a small infection in both ears. (black gunk, itchy, sometimes lets out small cries when he has to shake his head).

I started Tito on the pills yesterday, he's to take one per day for 10 days. In addition to the pills, I'm supposed to clean his ears with the solution 2x day. The problem is, it comes out of the bottle and fillls his ear canal rather quickly and I'm still mastering the application of the liquid. I know for a fact I used too much this morning because when he shook his head, a fairly large amount sprayed everywhere, both sides of his head were wet after I finished, and he was doing that thing with his tounge and his mouth like he got some in his mouth or throat. Aside from being nervous when I went around him this morning (probably afriad I was going to fill his ears with liquid again), he was ok in terms of his behavior and mood, but I still get a little worried that I hurt him or his ears by adminitering too much solution.

This is my first time dealing with a kitty ear infection with this kind of treatment. Any advice? Thanks in advance

Hello! You could try applying from a small spray bottle or a syringe for easier measurements. I doubt he's going to like it very much however you apply it. hold some cotton wool under the ear to catch any drips. Because we're not graced with 8 limbs like an octopus, it might be easier to have someone to help you as well. You can also get pet wipes, which you could use to mop up any nasty excess from his fur to stop him from licking it.

Great idea about the cotton wool; I bought some and it makes application and cleaning a lot easier. Poor little guy hates it so much but after three days of treatment and antibiotics he's slowly getting better. Hope by this time next week he will be mite/infection free. Thank you for taking the time to help. Cheers. Kim

If the solution's ingredients are very similar to these:

Purified Water USP, Propylene Glycol, Malic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Salicylic Acid

Then it is an all-purpose ear cleaner and not of prescription strength. You can't really 'overdose' a pet with these cleaners, unless you accidentally use a super huge amount, like 1/3 of the entire bottle.

If it is this type of ear cleaner, and not a medicated/antibiotic ear drop, your cat shaking his head is a good thing! With these cleaners, you fill the ear with liquid, massage at the base of the ear, and then let the cat shake all the loosened, black gunk out. After all the shaking is done, wipe the ear with a cotton ball or some tissue to remove excess moisture and stuck-on gunk. And probably the cat's neck and head, like you said happened earlier, lol! That stuff get everywhere, I've even seen it hit the wall.

Another way to tell if it is a cleaner or a medicine: antibiotics or medicated drops will clearly list the active ingredient by %, and will tell you exactly how many drops go in the ear for each dose. And they come in very small bottles, smaller than a Visine bottle.

If in doubt, you can always call the vet and ask if the solution is an ear cleaner or a medication, and if it is safe to use it how I described. I hope this helps!
