So this is a strange thing we have just noticed on our Siamese mix. She has recently developed 2 red bumps one on either side of her head exactly where the ears connect to the top of her head. She has no other health problems and these red bumps don't seem to bother her. They are bilaterally symmetrical in exactly the same location on each side. They originally had small scabs which have resolved and they are now just pink bumps. They don't seem to itch her. She does not have a fungal infection or ear mites. She doesn't have a bacterial infection. Here are the best pics I could get.
Our vet is stumped and so am I but I was wondering if they could be an allergy or from her over grooming. I haven't noticed any excessive grooming on her part but I guess it's possible or maybe one of our other cats is over grooming her but not that I've noticed. The only different things that she may have come in contact with were my son petting her (he doesn't live here and he's a smoker and nicotine vapor user so I wondered if it was on his hands she may have been allergic) and I used lotion the other day in my hands that I don't usually use. Maybe a contact dermatitis? We are putting animax ointment on it since that is anti itch, aniifungal, anti inflammatory and antibacterial. Anyone ever seen ir heard of anything like this?

Ok update...she is grooming like crazy. I've never just really sat and watched her. She doesn't have fleas. What is going on?

Thanks. Seems like it could be an allergy. I did switch litter about a week or so ago and it wasn't as "dust free" as it claimed to be. So I've gone back to my original litter just today. We will see if that makes a difference.

stephanietx stephanietx just a quick follow up...yesterday I switched back to our original litter and within just a little over 24 hours, Luna's redness at her ears and her heavy grooming ha subsided. So strange...both the first and second litters are clay non clumping formulas but there must be some component in the less expensive formula she can't tolerate. It's worth the extra money for her to be comfortable land happy. Here is my sweet Luna

WOW!  That was quick!  What type of litter does she prefer?  We have to use an all-natural litter with no scents added for one of my kitties.  Keep an eye on those spots to see if they improve, too.

Well, since she was a baby we used tidy cats for multiple cats non clumping. Then about a week ago, I switched to the generic from tractor supply as I was there getting their grain free food and I was out of litter (I believe it's called paws and claws). It was supposed to be dustless, but it definitely was not. I used that for about a week and it was during that time she developed the bumps and started with the excessive grooming. I think the dust was getting into her fur and irritating her skin. So yesterday morning I bathed her well and switched all of our litter boxes back to the tidy cats non clumping (which truly is dustless). By this morning there was a marked improvement in he bumps and this afternoon she is resting nicely with no wild licking and the redness is completely gone! Lesson learned I guess. As a side note we have four other cats who were unaffected. Like all things Siamese, that part of her genetics makes her more sensitive :)

You might look into some of the natural litters such as World's Best or Buffalo Walnut.  Not sure they track less, but if she continues to react to the litter, these may be an option.

Well she seems to not have a negative reaction to the tidy cats so I'm going to stick with that for now but I'm always open to making adjustments as needed for her health and wellbeing. It's amazing the improvement she has made since ditching the generic.
