A bit over a week ago, some customers came into my work with an abandoned 12 hour old kitten. They were only passing through and weren't sure what to do. I decided I would take her in.

So far she has been doing wonderful. She eats well, is growing appropriately, and is about to open her eyes.

However, tonight when I fed her for her 8 oclock feeding, I noticed something odd about the formula. It wasn't coming out as much as it should. When I checked it, I noticed it smelled awful.

Keep in mind this bottle was a brand new one that I'd just made.

When I poured the formula out it was curdled and thick. She had been eating for about ten minutes before I noticed she was ravenous as if she wasn't getting enough. I'm not sure how much she actually got into her tummy.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't want anything to happen to her because I didn't notice the formula went bad.

I made sure to get some new formula and put it into a new, fresh and clean bottle.

Now she is restless and I am afraid that because of my oversight, she will get sick :( What can I do?

Did the kitten then drink her usual amount of fresh formula from the bottle?

How much of the stale formula did she actually drink?

When I gave her the fresh new bottle, she drank her usual amount yes.

As far as the stale formula, I'm uncertain as the bottle I was using had no measurement lines on it. After she had her fresh formula, she seemed to calm down and go to sleep. She pooped and everything looked normal there but I am still concerned that if she got any of the spoiled formula into her belly that she'll get sick.

It sounds like so far she is doing okay. It's hard to know if she will become ill. If she does it might well be diarrhea, in which case I would push the clear pedialyte. Let's hope nothing happens as it sounds like she didn't actually ingest much. It's good you caught it when you did!

I will definitely do that. I may just buy some just in case tomorrow. Thank you!

If you end up opening the bottle and don't want to waste it, you can pour it into ice cube trays and freeze single-serve portions.

Let us know how she's doing :).

Thank you, I think I will do that :D

So far she is doing well. No diarrhea or anything like that. She does get a little restless but otherwise she seems fine.

My only other concern is that her eyes have not opened yet. She is 12 days old now, in the past any kittens I have had have opened them already

She's probably fine then. I would think if she's going to get sick it would already have happened. Kittens digest their food in about 2 hours at this age.

Her eyes will open soon! :)

Hello Again,

My little Nymph has been doing well so far after having taken her in at less than a day old. I keep her warm, fed, and clean.

However since yesterday when her eyes started opening, I have noticed that even a few hours after feeding her belly still looks a bit plump and full. She poops every time I stimulate her to go and yet still feels bloated.

I thought perhaps she had some air trapped, but I burp her each time she is fes as well.

Otherwise she seems fine. Unless I wake her up on accident by checking in on her. She sleeps very soundly after feedings (unless the flashlight wakes her), when she is cleaned or eating she purrs very loudly and kneads the small pillow I lay her on to eat. She is highly active when awake as well. It's just the bloating.

I make sure to portion her food carefully so I don't overfeed and I feed her every four hours. What could this be?

Healthy kittens do tend to have round little tummies to grow on :). However, if you think she is bloated, you can buy baby simethicone drops and put a couple of drops into her formula. This may help.

Otherwise, when she's around 8 weeks old, you can have her wormed.

It doesn't really sound like she's having any problems though.

You can continue any new questions in this same thread :).

It is almost certainly that she has worms - all kittens have them and it accounts for their little tummies looking round and full all the time. She is a little young to be wormed yet, but get some kitten wormer from your vet and do it as soon as permissible. Byt he way, although you are doing a great job, it is actually impossible to overfeed a kitten of this age unless you actually poured the food down its throat. Let her have as much as she wants and if she is content and goes to sleep after feeding and burping then she is fine. Are you weighing her every day to ensure she is gaining weight? If not, get a small scale that measures grams and keep a note of her gains. It is very reassuring to know, and you can take immediate steps if she starts to lose.
