Hello there!!
My name is Shelley, and last week I lost my spayed cat Neeka through a broken window screen.
Neeka came to be my cat about 3 years ago, when our old neighbors moved away and left her behind. She was pretty skittish for a while, but we were able to gain her trust with a daily tin of cat food, and a comfortable place to lie.
It took us about 4 moths, maybe more to eventually nab her.
Since then, Neeka has been an indoor cat, with one instance of her escape.
During that "adventure", she was gone a single night, and I was able to tempt her with a tin of sardines, grab her by her scruff, and haul her back inside.
That time she didn't seem at all afraid of me.
We live in a fairly remote part of town; I believe there are only 4 other houses on my street. As well... woods to the left of us, and woods across the street.
Neeka has been hiding in these wooded areas, venturing out only at night, and during the wee hours of the morning.
I often see her, but as soon as she sees me (whether or not there is food involved) she bolts for her elusive hiding spots.
I have tried a live trap (baited with salmon, sardines, and tuna), attempted to leave my utility room door open (hoping she would prefer her cat bed to a soggy patch of grass), sat outside all night waiting for her (hoping to begin to gain her trust once again), and tried just leaving her alone with her food.
Nothing seems to be working.
Neeka has never acted this way before, making me think that perhaps she was not the cause of her own escape... but rather her brother Marion getting into a fight with her and knocking her through the screen.
Unfortunately this HAS happened before with my other cat Mau Mau a few months back after a fight.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated... I really miss my sweet Neeka.
