I was driving and waiting at an intersection to turn green when I saw a dog with no owner nearby walking around on the other side. It even crossed the street and cars stopped for it to pass! I'm so glad the cars saw the dog and didn't go even when the light turned green.

The dog walked towards the fire station and disappeared behind some bushes.

I feel kind of bad for not going to look for it to make sure it wasn't lost. I regret not circling back to see what happened. I don't even know who to call if I even got a hold of the dog (if it didn't have a collar). I supposed I would have called my local shelter but would they be able to take the dog right away or would I have to keep the dog until the next day? And I don't think my parents or my cat would appreciate me bringing in a stray dog.

Just lots of regret at this point... I keep telling myself someone more kind hearted must have found the dog. Maybe even the firefighters at the station...

That's hard to deal with I know.  I actually bought  a dog leash from the clearance bin at Walmart a few months ago; after finding a dog.

My DH and I were supposed to be going to pick up subs after church while my parents took my kids to their house to eat and then DH and my step-father were working on a wood shed they were building.  But we got to the end of the street and there was a very old cocker spaniel walking right toward our car.  Other cars had to stop to move around her.  Her tongue was really hanging out her mouth.  We stopped and a mailman saw her and stopped.  The mailman had a water bottle so we got her a drink.  I kept having to take her collar to lead her to the grass so cars could get by.  I could tell she was in pain at her hip; but not if she was freshly injured.  The road she was trying to cross is BUSY!  DH knocked on some doors but no one claimed her.  One person said they'd seen her wandering before.

Some nice people went home and brought us a leash from their dog; who had recently crossed the bridge
.  The mailman called animal control; because no vets and the main shelters were all closed being a Sunday.  So DH and I stood there waiting while the mailman went on his way.  Eventually I saw a man walk to the end of his driveway a few blocks down the street and then he started hurrying our way.  The man thanked us and told us she is 16!  He carried her home while she licked his face.  It was so sweet and I was SO relieved I wouldn't have to leave her with animal control.  I couldn't take her home either.  She didn't have tags on her collar.

Out of curiosity I just looked up the average lifespan of a cocker spaniel and Google says it's 12-15.  So no wonder she looked so old and had her weak hip.  She seemed like a sweetheart and I'm just glad she had a happy ending that day.

I still think about a black lab I saw on the highway.  Not too far from there actually.  I could tell he had gotten out of his collar because you could see where his fur was rumpled from it.  He went back toward the neighborhood and I wasn't on the right side to catch him.  But I still think of it.  That was probably 14 years ago.

I'm glad I have the leash; just in case.  It cost me just a couple dollars.  I hope I don't have to use it. But I have it just in case.

I'M SO GLAD THE OWNER WAS THERE!!! Thank goodness you and your DH were there too and the mailman and the nice people with the leash.

I love the idea of having a dog leash with me in case of these situations. I believe I will go invest in one and like you, hope I never have to use it. Haha!

It's probably best to call the local shelter first. If nobody's answering the phone, call the police. About half the strays our local shelter gets are brought in by the police. They have a key to an emergency kennel accessed from the outside and just put the animal in there after hours, though sometimes they'll keep it at the police station until the shelter opens. It depends on the pet and cops. If they're having trouble catching a dog, they call the shelter manager at home and she organizes a rescue attempt.

Lots of times the person who finds the dog brings him in, so having a leash in the car is a great idea.
