Hi there,

I have made the mistake of consulting Doctor Google regarding a spot on Ollie's eye, and now I am quite nervous. I am going to take him to the vet, but any stories in the meantime will be appreciated.

Ollie basically has one black (or dark brown) spot on his iris, which you can only see if his pupils are quite thin. I have noticed this before several months ago but didn't give it a second thought, so I can't even say if it's grown or not. He is only a few years old, I don't think he's always had the spot but can't say for sure.

Thanks to the internet I have seen several photos of iris melanosis but it doesn't look quite like what he has. I have attached a couple photos although wasn't able to get the whole spot in there. It is not quite touching the end of the iris but far away from the pupil.

Any insights would be appreciated, especially if your cats have something similar!

Welcome!! OH yes - Dr. Google is a nasty one. :sigh: We all do this too. AW - Ollie is just beautiful too. His eyes look bright and healthy but I can see the little spot on the outer side of the iris. I would not worry yourself too much at this point. Yes - it could be Iris Melonisis but it could also be something quite benign. I have seen some cats that develop these on their iris' with no change in the spot as they age. I don't have the medical term for the benign spots but know they do exist and are harmless. Early detection of these eye issues is always best and leads to positive results and outcomes!! Please do keep us posted on your vet's findings! Hopefully others will chime in here but do take everything with a grain of salt, so to speak, until you get a check up from your vet. I am sure you are quite worried. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thank you! Here is another shot that I took today where you can see his spot -- Ollie is enjoying his Amazon box! I am certainly hoping it is benign and I do hope the vet is able to get a look at it - he hatessss the vet

Boxes make THE BEST cat hideouts and play things. I always keep some of my shipping boxes for the cats. Darling picture! :bigthumb:

Most cats do hate the vet and it is always so stressful for them. Let us know how the vet check goes. :cross: :vibes:

We have had cats here (on TCS) with both Iris Melanoma and Iris Melanosis.  My words of wisdom are to try to sit tight and not worry until there is something to worry about.  I know that's easier said than done

Is your appointment with a regular Vet or with an animal opthamologist?  You will probably be referred to an opthamologist, so if you can, maybe make an appointment with one straight away, to save Ollie from having to have two Vet visits.

Oh, and IF it turns out to be worse case scenario, he may need to have his eye removed, but cats adapt very well to that sort of thing.  Then he can be Ollie the pirate cat.  Arrgh.  But there is still no reason to think that will happen

Keep us posted
