As a new kitten mom I'm looking for suggestions on foods comparable to blue indoor kitten and wellness core. Grain and by product free. Our babies are 8, 10, and 12 wks old. The Siamese mix, Luna came to us at 4 weeks full of fleas worms and coccidia. She was abandoned and malnourished at only 9 oz. once she got a clean bill of health and weighing in at 2.5 lbs at now 10 wks, we adopted the tabby, Lily, and Layla from a local rescue. They are doing okay on the food but aren't crazy about it. Just seeking alternatives. Here are the baby girls

Assuming you want dry:

Blue makes Wilderness in kitten form

Nature's Variety Instinct (this is only one flavor, it comes in many different ones, it's all life stages)

Simply Nourish Source (my cats like the adult version of this in the same flavor)

You'll find more information about a brand's products on the company web site:

Nature's Variety Instinct: http://www.instinctpetfood.com/

Nature's Variety main web site: http://www.naturesvariety.com/

Blue Buffalo: http://bluebuffalo.com/for-cats/

Simply Nourish: http://nutrish.rachaelray.com/ (There is a recall on some of the canned and pouched foods. Info on the company web site)

Others:

Innova EVO: http://www.evopet.com/

By Nature: http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/by-nature-cat-food/

Canned foods are usually more appealing to kittens than dry food plus it's easier for little mouths to eat. Most people here recommend only canned food or a mix of canned and dry.

What a sweet bunch of kittens! Welcome to the Cat Site!

Since Luna is a Siamese mix, I just thought I'd mention that when we adopted our two Siamese mixes, our vet very strongly recommended feeding grain-free wet foods that are high-protein and low-carb. Siamese and mixes are apparently prone to digestive ailments so a very meaty diet is particularly important for them. These two, who are still young, do have sensitive stomachs--one had very smelly gas and vomiting even from foods with small amounts of potato starch--so we're pretty careful about what we feed them. They also came to us skinny and malnourished... but they've definitely made up for lost time!

Have fun with your three!

I know what you mean about the Siamese mix having digestive issues. Luna had the same...smelly gas and lots of diarrhea like pudding...it was terrible and I know the coccidia didn't help matters. she is clear of that thank goodness but she does have a very sensitive system. For a while she even had to be on the healing diet (chicken baby food with pumpkin purée to bul her stools). That was her vets reccomendation. Since then we have weaned her into traditional grain free kitten food and she's doing great. I wouldn't even consider changing her diet until she was six months or more and then very gradually!

I just wanted to point out that you don't have the right Simply Nourish web site. Simply Nourish is a Petsmart brand and is not the same as the Nurtrish rachaelray that you have down. Simply Nourish is a much better food. There are no recalls for Simply Nourish but there is for the Rachael Ray food.

Thanks all! Lots of good suggestions and I will have to do my research! I have read mixed reviews on the wellness core depending on which plant the food was processed so that's what got me thinking about it.

I don't blame you for not wanting to change Luna's food -- she needs to get some food into her and grow! Your mention of chicken and pumpkin reminded me that Soulistic's chicken/pumpkin food (they sell it in cans and pouches and Weruva has a similar pouch food) was very helpful when our other cat had diarrhea. Those foods are a little carby to feed often with all the sauce (it has tapioca in the gravy) but the cats love them and I always have some on hand, just in case!

I hope Luna's stomach stays stable!

Thanks for the advice! I may look into that food as a backup plan for tummy troubles.
