I am completely new here and am hoping for some help on what to feed a new kitten!
He is almost three months old and I started him on the Purina One Kitten Formula since I took him home as a trial test. I didn't know if I was going to keep him (I definitely am, he has been to the vet already yay!) The bag was the ten dollar bag, not too big. I don't want to throw it away and after doing some research I really don't want to give him dry food and am willing to go to the more expensive brands and take him to canned food completely. Until I do that, I want to combine the canned food with the dry food until the dry runs out. Would there be any harm in this? I've read about it and it doesn't seem like there are objections other than the dry food not being good for them due to the need for water in the food. After looking at the ingredients I noticed that there is wheat, soy, corn, etc. What should not be in the food. I just simply don't want to throw away the money I spent on the bag, but I will if it could harm the kitten. I also have fancy feast cans and the friskies pate. No fish flavors only chicken. I want to move to the wellness canned food brand for kittens. It's the most in my price range and what I can find in the area. I also saw recommendations for the Blue Buffalo canned food, but after reading the ingredients I felt like Wellness was a better way to go.
I'm currently mixing the wet and the dry and adding water at each feeding and I feed him three times a day. I left dry food out a couple days for free feeding, but I didn't really like that since I couldn't monitor how he's eating and how much etc.
I looked into the food because his stool is inconsistent. Just mushy, not diarrhea. I figured it was the switching between the food and after some reading I think that has been confirmed. Sometimes it's dark and solid and sometimes it's lighter and softer. I got a little alarmed thinking the food was harming him and then found all this out.
Like I said, I plan to move him to an all canned food diet, I just don't want to throw away an entire bag of food and figured mixing it together and adding water would be better than all dry food of course. He has eaten just canned no problem. He doesn't seem to be picky if it's dry or wet food luckily.
The vet recommended putting him on Urinary Tract geared dry food, but if I put him on an all canned food diet, do I still need to worry about putting him on a specific canned food FOR that? Since canned food has water and all. Which leads me to the question of, should I still feed him dry food for urinary tract reasons or just go all canned food diet and most likely shouldn't be a problem.
I've never owned a cat or a dog so I'm completely new to all this. Just don't want to make bad decision and end up with a sick kitty.
