One of the most adoptable cats in my TNR colony just outside Raleigh, NC showed up this week with a broken leg that will probably have to be amputated. I have some people offering to donate for her surgery, but what I really need is someone to adopt her or at least foster her.

I have four cats of my own and have been fostering two others in addition to feeding the TNR colony. Between this, singlehandedly running a business, taking care of my elderly mother, and preparing to move to a new house in August, I am completely overwhelmed--to the point where I'm thinking I might have to have this kitty put to sleep. This is the last thing I want to do, but I just can't handle one more responsibility. I can't in good conscience take her back to an outdoor TNR colony with three legs because she'd be too vulnerable to predators.

Everyone drowns me in unhelpful advice, referring me to other rescuers or organizations I'm already familiar with who are also overwhelmed since it's kitten season. I've already talked to them. I've advertised everywhere, but all I get is "I wish I could help, but . . . " messages. I don't need any more pie-in-the-sky suggestions. I need ONE thing and ONE thing only: someone to step up to help.

The thing that really kills me is that I've had a couple stringing me along about adopting this cat. It's been one excuse after another about why they need to wait. Now she's injured, so they don't want her.

The kitty is a small, sweet tortie, about 3 years old, very gentle. She is already spayed and vaccinated. Her right front humerus is broken. She let me pick her up and put her in a carrier, even with a broken leg.

About the couple that don't want her now that she's injured, good riddance -- they would not be a good home as they have now showed their true colors.  The "right" family would have wanted her even more.  Have you tried the Facebook Group Tortoiseshell/Tortie and Calico Cats?  I have seen long distance adoptions happen through this group (we all love torties) so give it a try, https://www.facebook.com/groups/Tortoiseshell.tortie.calico.cats/

AND transport can be arranged through another group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/URRKN/ the Underground Railroad Rescued Kitty Network.  The receiving party has to join but it is free, you just offer your time to drive a leg if and when needed.  It works like a Pony Express.  Check it out.

FYI check out Grey Boy's story below my signature.  he was a feral with both front legs injured.  He has adapted to being an inside kittey, and just this year is finally letting me touch him, as long as there's another cat right next to him.

Good luck, I bet you will be able to find a home or foster for her through that group.

I have a lead that surfaced this afternoon for an adoption in North Carolina, so I'm hoping that this person follows through!

I hope the adoption pans out. Poor kitty. Did she lose her leg for sure? [emoji]128542[/emoji] I have a family member in the Raleigh area, but it would be a long shot to ask him. I will ask though, if it comes to that.

My adoption lead looks pretty solid, and she works as a veterinary technician.

I have an appointment on Monday with a vet I work with who does advanced surgeries as well as running a general practice.

The odd thing is that I just checked on her, and she was rolling on her right side, the side with the injured leg, to get rubbed. I also swear I saw her move that paw. I think we will know a lot more once we get x-rays and get them looked at by an expert.

The vet who evaluated her on Wednesday runs a small, inexpensive practice, mainly for routine issues, which is a good thing to have, but I'm now wondering if he got the diagnosis 100% right. I tried to get her in to see the vet she's going to see on Monday as soon as I caught her, but he was booked solid and then going out of town. (Actually, my first two choices of vets were totally slammed.)

Sending prayers her leg can be saved! And best wishes on the adoption part, as well.

She is a beautiful tortie and I am sending truckloads of vibes for her upcoming surgery. Also - many more that her new potential adopter comes true. Your work for the feral cats is very, very much appreciated as we need so many like you out there in the world. :hugs: :grphug: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

The way I see it, a good home is found who will provide the best veterinary care, and the rest will take care of itself. The best of luck in your quest, and you are fantastic to be so diligent. I feel strongly this will all work out, and very happily.

Update: We saw the surgeon today and got x-rays. He thinks he can save the leg, and he verified that she still has sensation. Surgery is not going to be cheap, but I think I can raise the money from friends. She's being a real trooper and has been very easy to handle.

The disturbing part: What happened to her was not an accident. Someone shot her.

But they're out in the country, and the bad thing about being in the country is the combination of rednecks and guns.

Many prayers to miss kitty. Let us know if you happen to start up a go fund me page, please.

[emoji]128535[/emoji][emoji]128535[/emoji][emoji]128535[/emoji] thank you for saving her life. She returned because she knew you were there to help her, I'm sure.

Oh, goodness! Poor kitty getting shot. That is beyond sick! I can hardly stand to think of it.

Yes, please let us know where/how to donate for her care. Though we on this site are scattered far and wide, we would still like to contribute.

I am relieved to hear that her leg may be saved. That is awesome news for this kitty. Thank you again for all you are doing, and for the update, and please let us know what we can do!

God bless!

I am so glad you have saved this beautiful girl, but I have to disagree with your generalizing about people being in the country being a bad thing as "rednecks and guns"

I live in the country, I am a redneck AND I have guns.... I hunt, I fish but I DO NOT SHOOT CATS!!!!!!

Those people who do these things are neither redneck or decent people. Those who shoot animals for fun are IMO sorry excuses for human beings. I prefer the company of cats over most humans!!

I am a GOOD person and really don't appreciate being LABELED as being BAD because I live in the country, am a redneck and have a gun.

I love cats, have cats, and have saved many in my life from irresponsible people.

Please take note to remember that labeling people because of where they live is what is wrong with the world today. These people make their choices and just because they live in a different area doesn't mean they are ALL BAD.

Stepping down from my soap box now.....Thank you.

Oh dear... I am sick to hear this and unfortunately know this happens. Just had a friend - a member here on site - who's cat was just shot too and had to have the leg amputated. I think a back leg. The cat is doing very, very well and recovering beautifully which always amazes me. Cats are so resilient, miraculously so.

Still keeping up the vibes for this girl. She is so lucky that you stepped up to help her. Keep the updates coming. :hugs: :grphug: :rub: :vibes:

That's horrible. Those poor cats. it really is amazing how resilient they are. These stories make me think of that sorry excuse for a veterinarian who shot poor Tiger with a bow and arrow. There are very sick people in the world but I firmly believe that in the end, karma will catch up to them.

I hope both of these cats make a full recovery and that adorable tortie finds a home with someone who will love her and protect her for the rest of her life.

@David68 My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your beautiful little girl.  Doesn't matter where people live, it's the mindset of that person who decided to hurt, injure or maim any living creature.

I just want to say that I think David 68 really wasn't talking about you (kntrygrl256). He is doing a very good deed for this cat and also he takes care of a colony of cats. I know exactly what he was trying to say and exactly how he was thinking when he found out that this cat was shot.  And I think when he said this, he was mad and really wasn't out to offend anyone so don't take this to heart.  I am sure he meant nothing by it, he was only trying to defend his kitty and he's doing a good job trying to find it a home and get it vet care. So lets just try to help him out not chew him out. I am the same kind of person you are but I didn't take offense to this because I know I am not that kind of person, I don't kill animals, so I know he wasn't talking about me. Believe me there are all kinds of people out there that think shooting animals is a fun things,  they can be anyone, from anywhere shooting animals. So they are cruel inhumane people doing horrible things. But do keep up the good work on your end helping animals out.
Everyone on this sight appreciates what people do to help out animals.

@buffy2011   I am glad that @David68  saved this beautiful girl and is doing whatever is necessary to take care of her. I stated that as the first line of my comment.  I'm sure people take offense to what I said but I don't feel like I "chewed" him out, just stated my opinion and corrected an incorrect statement.

There are so many things going on here in the South that any derogatory remarks against the place I live I tend to take offense and I will defend it as necessary, but will do so in a respectable manner.

I love being on this site and have met some wonderful people. I love the work that everyone does and love the stories. Thank you for your comment and I also understand you feelings on the matter.
