Hi everyone.just wondering if anyone has dealt with Ecoli rearing it's ugly head with one of your babes & how you dealt with it.A friend not a member here has a 17yr old kitty with many ailments. Her vet prescribed Trimethoprim/Sulfa.kitty became hypo T now and re-urinalysis on   regrowing in petry dish shows ecoli again.vet doesn't know what to do.her WBC is 30,000.Any experience dealing with this and managing many meds would be so helpful.thanks so much & keep up the great work all YOU do!!! Sorry for the typos...C.

E coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections, and is responsible for more than 50% of them. It can "hide" in the bladder wall, and be a very stubborn thing to treat. The antibiotic is often given for a month, rather than a 7 or 10-day course in order to knock it out.

Orbax is a common antibiotic used to treat UTIs.

I've not heard of that antibiotic, but that doesn't mean it won't work. The main thing is giving it the longer time needed.

Thanks LDG.I know she has her on D-mannose I'm not sure of the dosage. She actually belongs to the feline flutd group at yahoo and has many yrs of utis, cystitis etc.her Kitty has many ailments.Stage 3 Ckd,Bad arthritis. Is on alot of meds.this drug I told you about if very volatile causing the thyroid to be destroyed.I will email her the name of the med you said. She is like i said dealing with members on her group daily with crystals, stones, uti's & pretty much any urinary ailment.but this one has sent her senior kitty for a loop. No symptomology though.Weird.but soon will be if it travels up into a kidney..But this one just won't let go.She has been on it for weeks now.i told her I would post the question here as there are just so many people all over the world .truly wonderful!! i thank you and thank anyone that has any info.C.

Well, this person had Hashimoto. But I found it *very* interesting that when I googled drug-induced hypo-T, it was one of the first things I found: the same drug your friend's kitty is taking (trimethoprim) was potentially involved in this person becoming hypo-T (she also took cefalexin). https://healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...biotics-specifically-trimethoprim-or-ceflaxin

So I went searching to see if there was a relationship. And I found that sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim causes hypo-T in dogs.

I say it's time to get the vet to stop that antibiotic, and switch to a different one!

Yes this is what I thought. And all studies have been done on dogs ,some rats,& I think cattle possibly.I told her,her vet was in the stoneage & get an Internist.i only dealt with an Internist.I googled your med and it says it causes or can cause blindness. So I think we won't go there. Her WBC are now up to 30,000 so it is ugly. This is not a job for clavamox for sure.Hypo is very rare in cats but does state online that this med will cause it in cats. But reading onward I see it may be salvagable over time.just can't find out how much time.I also read which is kinda funny as i belong to the MC group at yahoo for yrs that hypo in cats can cause them to defecate outside the litterbox.I found this interesting as a lot of kitties do not go in the box.Usual learned litterbox aversions.I always recommend to new members BW & Urinalysis looking for renal values USG & creatinine as peeing out all your water will cause constipation as well but never mentioned a T4 test.Apparently in the states the regular BW includes the T4 but here in Canada at least where I am It is only an add on.I had one HyperT kitty in my life.Thank you for posting.Truly we are learning everyday. And yes we shouldn't have to goggle anything about meds. That's why we pay vets what we pay. They should know way ahead of time.Hopefully she will get some help.Thank you C. :)

Yes, there is risk with Baytril (enrofloxacin vs. Orbax/Orbifloxacin). But I'm not sure there is a stronger antibiotic written for cats? When properly dosed, I won't say there's no risk, but the risk is minimized. Flowerbelle was on Baytril for a middle ear infection found by MRI. She had to take it for three months due to the potential for the infection to have eaten its way into her bone.

Hi LDG.Thanks for your reply.Yes that is a long time on baytril. But we have to do what we have to.I belong to alot of the yahoo groups and have read post of kitties on antibiotics indefinitely in their Senior yrs. When they can tolerate it it well and their quality of life is good you have to do what you have to.I just talked to my friend and the new culture just done came back Escherichiacoli 100,000.So first test it was 12,000.Next it was at 30,000 now 100,000.Showed sensitivity to Amikacin.Which BTW the Trimethoprim/Sulfa increased her creatinine into the 4's.You can read online that in humans it can raise creatinine. So this 17yr old is stage 3 CKD is being told to use this new med.Not renal friendly at all.So I am very worried as well as her Mom.She is doing another sensitivity again for a drug called meropenem. It is more kidney friendly. So hopefully. But is just nasty.I am shocked that with ecoli being so common other members have not replied.78,000 people is alot of members.I truly appreciate your input.Thank you.hugs.C
