Hi there,

My 15 year old tabby "Mini" HAS A RAW PAW. It looks sooo bad and painful. We have taken her to the Vet many time now and she was given 2 injections of antibiotics  on 2 separate visits and is now get steroids orally for about 2 weeks or so with no improvement. Her appetite is still there but seems to be waning at times. Any thoughts or guidance is appreciated.

That looks so painful!  Poor baby!  I'm thinking a second opinion might be in order.

Do you know how it happened?  Is she in a cone so she can't lick it?

Poor thing!! I agree, get a second vet's opinion. A cat-only vet if you can. Poor thing must be in so much pain!

Yes we will be getting good a second opinion for sure. No idea what happened there and mini is wearing the cone. Any thoughts as to what this might be?

Ouch!

I agree, seek out treatment from another vet. If there are no other vets in your area, insist that your vet consult with other vets, prehaps by contacting the vet school he/ she attended or did a residency at or asking on VIN.com (a vet only web site with a forum and veterinary articles) or seeking a consult from this well known vet hospital.

Do you know how this injury occured? Does your cat go outside?

Self inflicted injury or infection of some sort comes to my mind. Is there any chance she could have stepped in caustic household chemicals or something?

Yeah, it looks like the fur and skin have been kind of eaten away there. Poor Mini! I'd be looking for a second opinion for sure.

I would ask the vet to either do a fine needle aspirate or a biopsy ASAP. Unfortunately the vet I work for had a similar case and kept treating it as an infection. After it kept getting worse they did a FNA where they take some cells from the wound, put them on a slide, and look at it under a microscope, and it ended up being cancer. I don't want to scare you but the quicker it's diagnosed the quicker you can come up with a treatment plan. Of course there's always a chance it could be something else too. I believe there's certain fungal infections that can cause nasty lesions too.
