A few hours ago I received a call from my boyfriend about my 8 wk old kitten. She was hiding under his recliner and he went to go sit down on it and closed the foot rest, he heard a loud yelp so he quickly opened it and got her out. She was obviously frightened, she peed all over the floor. But now we are really worried that she may be hurt. She doesn't have any blood on her or signs of broken bones, nothing on the outside. But I am scared she could have head trauma or be hurt internally. After it happened he said she laid on the floor for awhile and wasn't be really responsive. Later she began to stand up and walk but was swaying back and forth like she couldn't balance. She then was laying on the couch and kept acting like she wanted to get up but would lay back down as if she was disoriented. I looked up signs of internal bleeding and brain damage. he checked to see if her gums were white, they were not. He shined a light in her eyes and they both dilated and appeared to be normal. She seems to be able to see and hear still. She used the litter box and he did not see any blood in her urine or stool. She is now laying down and won't stop purring. I read that after something traumatizing sometimes cats purr a lot to calm themselves if they are in pain. She is now acting really sleepy and barely opening her eyes. We are very worried to let her fall asleep in case she has a brain injury. We are just playing the waiting game as of now and hoping that she will be back to acting normal tomorrow. If she isn't soon then I will be taking her to a vet. He feels terrible about it and it was a complete accident so please don't judge. I am wondering if any has had a similar experience or has any advice?? Thanks

I would definitely get her checked out even if she seems better tomorrow. It can't hurt to be sure. Kittens are resilient though! :)

I too suggest having her seen by a vet ASAP.

Is there an emergency clinic in your area? If so, I would call and talk with the vet.

If there is head trauma, there is a window of opportunity to administer medication to reduce brain swelling.

At the very *least*, I would keep a close eye on her and get her to the vet first thing in the morning.

Thank you guys for your concern!  I took her today and she is doing just fine :)  I think she was probably just really frightened and did get bumped a little but nothing major to worry about. Now i know to let every cat owner I come in contact with to beware of those evil recliners!

They can be really unsafe. I know someone whose 4 year old child was killed when some older kids squashed him in a recliner just thinking they were playing. So happy Gilly is OK!

I agree they are unsafe. I've heard real horror stories about recliners (concerning cats anyway). You might want to thump your legs against the chair when you get ready to get out, or keep a sprayer around... My father used both to train our cats to stay away after hearing about cats being decapitated by recliners.

Got to the point we'd climb out with it open, and check, before lowering it. Yep, did that for years...much to the bemusement of visiting family.

Unreal they could kill a child. Wow...[emoji]128543[/emoji]

We do that all the time too. We're just in the habit of always checking where the cats are before shutting it.

I'm glad your wee kitten is doing OK D doritosmom

We have a reclining sectional in the living room and we do the same thing when we're ready to get up - just hop off of it while it's still in a reclined state :)   hanging out under the recliner seems to be a favorite cat hang-out, so we're also in the habit of just leaving the sectional seats in a fully reclined state at all times haha

So happy your kitten is OK!  I've read so many sad horrible stories of kittens getting squashed and killed underneath recliners - esp. if you're new to owning cats, it wouldn't necessarily be something that you would even think about checking.
