Hello!

So my cat, Miller, is coming home this afternoon after 1 night at the ER clinic and 1 night at our vets office. He had a really bad blockage. They cleared him out but he still has blood in his urine and they said his bladder is really squishy/flaccid and his kidney levels are "not ideal".    So our vet is sending him home with us for the weekend with his catheter and IV still in. I'm worried because I feel like he should still be with the vet so they can watch over him. Is it normal for cats to come home with these things? We are setting him up in a pretty decent sized play pen, so that he can't move around too much but can still get to his litter box. I'm just worried that he will pull something out or hurt himself more. We are going to watch him of course, I've just never heard of this and don't want him to end up worse than he is. Any advice/tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I have never heard of doing this, particularly the IV.  I kind of understand it though, even though it is unusual.  Stress can be a big part of this issue and he would be less stressed at home.

It seems kind of odd to me too, but just be sure to get all the instructions from the Vet as to what to do, and their emergency phone number just in case.  Doesn't he have on an e-collar so he can't pull anything out?  If not, be sure to ask plenty of questions, like what happens if he pulls something out?, or won't he be able to pull it out?, or how to we keep him from pulling it out?...anything that you're worried about, ask them.

on a full recovery for your little one

This is strange. I do agree with the others, about him should have been kept in the hospital especially as you'll have to change/reload the IV bag and adjust the drip or whatnot. I am sure I would not feel comfortable doing it myself. Also the cat needs to be given a sedative or anesthesia for the removal of the catheter. Usually cats are kept in the hospital for at least 3 days on IV and catheter and then on the 4th day the catheter is removed and the cat is observed to see if he can pass urine, if so, he can go home. If not, he is kept an additional few days and tried again to see if he can pass urine without the catheter. Did they say what caused the blockage? Is he on canned food? Also I am wondering along with the others about the cone collar? Also he will be in pain as after a blockage, the bladder will spasm and contract. I am hoping he is on pain meds and anti-spasmotics. I am tagging @puck  as she is very knowledgable in these areas.

Seems pretty strange that they would send him home with all of that to me as well...my cat was blocked 2 weeks ago and they wouldn't send him home until he had a big pee on his own....
