Asthma more common then thought

I've come to realize that this subject is more common then thought but wanted to share my own story.

We've had our cat Noney now for about 6 years.  He was a stray we found in our backyard and decided to adopt him.  He's a wonderful cat.  So loving and playful.  We noticed he had been fixed so whoever owned him before had taken care of him that much.

Anyhow over the years we noticed what we thought were hairball coughs.  They cough would only last a few seconds and only on and off over the years.  Well one day we noticed something a little different .  He was coughing and swallowing weird.  Prior to that our other cat was just getting over a sinus cold.  Then we noticed Noney also sneezing to add to it all.  So now we had a cat who was sneezing, coughing and swallowing weird.

We kept a very close eye on him.  I'm home during the day so I can take care of him.  Anyhow it got worse.  He started only breathing out of his mouth.  So I started to do my research over the internet along with trying to find a good vet in our neighborhood.  You see we've never had any issues with either one of our cats.  They are indoor cats which I let go on our upstairs deck every now and then and both have had their shots and been fixed.  All of a sudden I find these videos with examples of cats coughing who have 'Asthma" not hairballs like so many assume, including myself.  It matched perfectly with our Noney.

So we found a vet.  Brought him in to see the vet.  With what we told them they said it did sound like 'Asthma' and a cold.  But they wanted to do all these tests.  Run blood work, xrays etc...  The bill all summed up was close to $1000.  And yes Noney is way worth it absolutely.  But then the vet tells me he has no guarantees.  And that we would have to wait on the xrays because in Noneys condition it could be fatal the stress on the procedure.   And this vet for some reason wouldn't get us a prescription for any antibiotics either.  So what my husband and I did was get Noney the steroid shot for the 'Asthma' then took him home to keep an eye on him and see how he would do.  In the meanwhile I picked up some L-Lysine for his cold to try and boost his immunity. During this whole time he kept eating and drinking water so that was good.  And was using his litter box just fine.  We also ordered some Amazapet for dogs and cats who have asthma or respiratory problems.

Made another appointment for a different vet who would get us the antibiotics after we told them what had happened.  Well Noney amazed us and little by little started to improve with each day.  So we didn't have to get the antibiotics.  Just kept giving him the L-Lysine along with the Amazapet.  Amazapet is highly rated and is all natural it reduces the bronchospasm & tight chest plus opens the airways.  I just grind it up and add it to his can food along with the powdered L-Lysine.  I've read that so many people don't like using the steroids for their cats.  It makes them gain weight and get loopy and eventually the cats build up immunity to the effects so they don't work as well.  So that's why I choose this alternative option.

We also have changed from clay litters which I read our highly toxic to cats and humans.  Also purchased a great air purifier that has 5 different filters and is a certified HEPA air filter for those who have asthma.  All these little changes have made a big difference.  Noney is back to his silly and active self.  He might get a very light cough every now and then but it's under control without steroids.  I'm not saying I only recommend handling it this way, it's just what worked for Noney and our family.

I think what happened was it being the time of year where everything was in bloom with allergies and a cold virus combined just set him off.  It trigured the asthma and compounded everything.

All is good now.  Cats are great.  Household is at peace once again

I am glad your kitty is doing better. I used to have a cat with severe asthma that I had to give steroids to, along with twice daily breathing treatments--not fun. She was a very sweet kitty though.

I was really surprised at how many people have cats with asthma.  No idea a cat could get asthma.  I'm sorry your little sweetie had it so bad.  I did some research on the AeroKat and I know my Noney would not be so keen on that idea lol.   It helped me a lot to read other peoples posts and how they dealt with the situation.  Plus I'm glad I found a local vet clinic that would work with me and didn't make me feel stressed about it.

Just a update for ya all.  It is now going on 8 months since my little Noney got sick.  He is doing really great these days.  I changed his litter to all natural (no clay) and bought a air purifier.   I've been giving him daily his powdered Lysine & AmazaPet for his asthma and this has really helped soooo much!  No asthma symptoms until only a few nights ago.

I read that the change in weather (cold) can provoke the coughing.  He's a indoor cat but sometimes the house can get cold.   But it was just a little cough and then he was fine.  Amazing on how just a few changes can make a huge difference in health for our babies

Noney says "MEOW" to the whole cat community.
