One orphaned kitten

I am currently looking after a newborn kitten. It was found in a barn last Monday by itself in the middle of nowhere. The owners left it there overnight hoping momma would come back for it..but she didn't. So they brought him in Tuesday morning and started to feed it.

The kitten had to be with mom for a day or two, he was clean and strong. They were giving him the evaporated milk kitten recipe so I continued with it for fear of giving him digestive upset. (normally I give KMR)

So, if my guess is correct, he had to have been born at the latest last Sunday, which makes him 6-8 days old. His umbilical cord when he was discovered wasn't there but I think momma chewed it very close to his belly as he had a tiny dried piece there.

He is doing really well on the formula, in fact better than some of my KMR babies. (I find it constipating for them)

Now the problem is that his eyes haven't started to open yet. I realize it can take up 14 days. (I think I"ve had one later)

I"m kinda worrying that he doesn't have eyes. Perhaps Momma abandoned him for a reason.

Does anyone else use the evaporated milk recipe with success? It certainly is alot cheaper. Here's a pic of the baby, I call him Elijah.

He was 133g on Tues and he is 200g today. So..18g per day. Pooping and peeing well. Very content.

I don't see anything wrong with this formula, but usually as a back up or in an urgent situation, I do prefer KMR though to be honest.

It is formulated specifically for all the needs of a growing thriving baby, but yes, of course, it definitely costs more.

It's your decision really, but in my opinion it might be risky to fully raise the baby on this formula as it can't be complete. (no taurine for one)

Regarding baby's eyes, they're there Just not ready to pop them open yet, soon.....

What a precious baby! So glad you are giving him a home and care!

I'm not worried about cost. I have two huge tins of KMR in my freezer. (I've been fostering for many years)  I'm more worried about upsetting his tummy. Also, I am "fostering" for these people and if he ends up back there, I think  they would rather use the formula they started him on. (I"m assuming here).  Their mother is out of the country and will be home in a week. No one was going to be around to feed him, so that is why I have him at the moment.

When I"m sure he has the care required, I will send him back... I think..  

Sigh..I think I'll start mixing in bits of KMR tomorrow..I will just give them the tin. It should be enough to keep him going til he's on real food.

Re the KMR.  Its in powder?  If so, its interesting to know it doesnt always work  100%.   Their  ready made liquid equivalent is known to be less reliable the than the powder version...

Can you get raw goat milk?  As I understand it, its not sold in the usual shops, because its unpasterized.  You must go by the word of mouth...

That should  work nicely in all variations.

Althoug some forumites mention they can get fresh goat milk in the shops.

Bottled or in plasted cardboard boxed goat milk, should work too, if full fat.  But if it is better than  KMR in powder, I dont know.

Nice to know this here recipe you tell about does work. The ingredients arent very peculiar.

Well, he's being a bit of a bugger. I added 1/4 part KMR into his usual formula and he was not impressed at all. Fought me for 3 feedings, acting like I was putting in poison. I finally went back to the first formula to make sure that is why he wasn't eating and he sucked it back like a pro!

I've always used KMR powder with success except maybe constipation issues. He seems to be thriving very well on this formula.

AND....I see an eyeball! lol Yes, finally an eye is peeking through.

I think if you continue he will adapt to it, he certainly has plenty of healthy weight gain every day so not really considered risky if he gives you a fuss, it won't last, and I do feel it is best regarding nutritional value, which nothing else can match.

I tend to think of also in terms of future health.

Although they CAN be raised successfully on home made formulas, infant baby formulas, etc. I truly believe sometime in their life, it will create an issue, and likely never connected to their babyhood, but organs, bones, teeth, everything is developing at an incredibly fast rate right now, the fastest growth they will ever have is now, and a depletion of a simple nutrient may very well affect his system or a part of it down the line at some point.

Perhaps it's kidney disease, or IBD, no telling, but this is why I really push the KMR formula over all other.

When will he be wormed?

I deworm kittens at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks.First vaccine 8-9 weeks, spayed/neuter at 9-10 weeks/reaching 2 lbs.

Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for healthy neurological development. It is found in meat, chicken, fish and breast milk, and is added to KMR and many dry cat and kitten foods.

@catwoman707   Do you think that me be a bit young for the males? I usually have mine done around 4 or 5 months so that all will be nearly developed. A male cat I adopted from Petsmart was neutered at 2 months and he was blocked later in life and I was told by the vet that it was incredibly hard to place a catheter as he is a bit, well, small in that area. Which is why I hesitate having them done so young. He is a 14 pound cat. All my other males have done well afterwards being neutered a little later.

My vet recommends anytime between 4 and 6 months.
