Hi,

Our cats used to be on Orijen dry, supplemented with MUSH BARF. We've read that it's better for them to be on scheduled wet feedings instead of free-fed dry and now due to urinary infection problems in one of our kittens (who is still in hospital) we are actually making the switch. The thing is, compared to something like Primal (which you can't seem to get in Sweden at least judging by a quick look at their website) MUSH has considerably fewer ingredients.

Example:

https://www.mushbarf.com/sv/var-hundmat/mush-barf-basic-cat-kyckling-kalkon-gris

Google Translate of ingredients:

Finnish chicken 47% (meat, heart, bones, liver, skin, gizzard), Finnish turkey 35% (meat, bones), Finnish pig 18% (meat, kidney, heart, liver, bone), of which: meat 54%, means 23% (of which heart 10%), cartilage, tendons and ligaments of 12%, 11% fresh bone.

This does not include any vegetables, added vitamins, etc. I've already been supplementing with a general multivitamin paste that comes with Taurine, but would like to take this seriously and find out exactly what this diet may be lacking so that I can add it in with the rest of the meal (ie taurine-specific supplement instead of just a general  multivitamin, some kind of vegetables, anything else?)

We want to make sure our cats can get a proper, balanced diet and just wanted to see if any experienced raw-feeders here had any input on what we should add to this.

Thank you.

the last part of that website turned out as:

"Complete with red meat and calcium

When using MUSH B.A.R.F. Basic[emoji]174[/emoji] CAT chicken-turkey-pig, it is mostly red meat that needs to be added. The product also contains some of minerals and trace elements. It is therefore necessary to supplement with pretty much red meat and calcium, either in the form of edible bones, or you're giving bone meal. To make it simple, one can say that you need to add one bun red meat per two buns chicken-turkey-pig. It is also advisable to add blood or blood meal in order to secure iron requirement - it needed about 50 grams of blood per 1 kg of food so there is no huge quantities. 50g fresh blood correspond to about 3 teaspoons of blood meal / blood powder. I also recommend that you supplement with a little beef liver for the cat to get in to the copper it needs. The act nor on any large quantities.

       Calculation example:

You have a cat at 3 kg who eats 5% of their body weight each day. It is 150 g / day. There will be over a week a total of 1050 g of food. For this food is:

650 g MUSH B.A.R.F. Basic[emoji]174[/emoji] chicken-turkey-pig (about 30 buns)
335 g of red meats, like pig heart
40 g of blood or 3 teaspoons of blood meal. If you give blood meal substitute to those 40 grams of blood with two buns MUSH chicken-turkey-pig
15 g of beef liver
10 g of edible bones or 1 tablespoon bone meal
340 mcg of iodine (such as algae)
One can also provide an egg yolk about 2 times a week. It is a useful vitamin and fatty acid bomb!

MUSH B.A.R.F. Basic[emoji]174[/emoji] CAT Beef pig can be used as red meat, but you should also supplement with other red meats. I can not guarantee that the food will be complete comparable to a complete feed, but it's probably as close as you can get at home."

Oh wow that's quite a bit that we haven't been doing. Will start adding this asap! Not sure if we can find pig heart, liver, or bones at our local ICA :S Fingers crossed

Normally you can order it at ICA., but be prepared that you might have to buy more if it something they usually not carry (I had to buy 3 packs of chicken hearts when I made my order- to make sure that they are not stuck with something that they can not sell to "normal" customers).  The best shop when it comes to "weird meat"- City Gross! Normally you will find heart, liver , pigtail, kidneys, blood, lung......easiest kind of liver to find is beef and chicken. You can find chicken hearts at the big food stores, but chicken hearts are lower in taurin than i.e pig heart. Most stores have chicken liver as well (contains less vitamin A than beef liver).

If you find this adding to complicated- you could do a batch yourself. I started the same way, but got tired of adding small amounts of this and that.

Bone meal, algae supplement and blood meal you can find at webshops as "animail" and "hemfoder". "Zooplus" has bone meal and blood meal and algae as well.

Big stores for pet food might have a selection of bone and meat with bones. Some might even carry the supplement needed.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I will try to find all of the supplements. Can't see a City Gross near us, but maybe they deliver (will check tonight).

I think you mentioned in an earlier post that MUSH are actually coming out with a complete cat food this summer, that includes everything? Or did I misunderstand?

Two or three kinds of complete mush for cats will be here this summer. The person who is in charge of these new foods work as a food advisor in raw meat for cats- so it feels reliable! She helped me to balance my recepie for my still growing cat.
