Before I start: I've called the vet! I'm waiting for a call back now. Since she's just gone to the bathroom, I've downgraded this to "very concerning" from "impending emergency".

I'm hoping some of you here have experience with cats holding their urine longer while on Prozac/Fluoxetine. I am aware that this is a possible side effect.

My cat is on a dosage of 2 mg/day, which she takes each evening in pill form. She's a little over 7 1/2 pounds. Prior to going on Prozac, she would urinate twice a day, would poop maybe once every 18 hours. Since she's been on Prozac, it seems like that time has doubled - once a day urination, once, sometimes twice every two days for pooping. She's really weirded me out this time, though - I'm not sure how long it's been between peeing, but it's at least 36 hours.

She went overnight on Tuesday night, and I scooped it Wednesday at about 5 am before I went into work. As of this morning, she hadn't gone again. I was concerned, but it was possible that she'd gone right before I woke up on Wednesday, so I decided to give her the day while i was at work to go again. She didn't until after I was home again this afternoon at 4.

She stays in one room during the day, and I've searched that room for signs that she's gone elsewhere. I can't find any, and there really aren't a lot of options here. Her bladder felt full when I got home, but she seemed in good spirits and playful - not distressed in any way. She just didn't seem to remember that she needed to use the litter box.

I pulled out some Kitten Attract litter and filled another box, and she dug around in it a little while I called the vet, but made no attempt to squat, and then seemed to get bored. She wandered over to her other boxes and sniffed at them curiously, as if I had just changed the litter - interested but not in need of a box. Then she would get distracted and go play with something else. After about 20 minutes, she finally used one.

This is weird, folks. It's like she just didn't remember that she needed to go. I'm going to taper back her dosage a bit and see if that helps. I'd like to keep her on the Prozac for the few months recommended by the vet. She was a genuinely miserable, terrified cat without it and is a genuinely relaxed, cheerful cat with it. I'm very concerned about this development, though.

Ritz was on Prozac for FHS. I too noticed that she peed less. I tapered the dose (for unrelated reasons) and her urination is back to normal (although she as a rule doesn't pee a lot to begin with).
Glad you called the vet.

Thanks for telling me what happened with Ritz. Friday, she used the litterbox after 26 hours, and today after 18, so we're headed in the right direction anyway.

She's not using the Kitten Attract box, but having it out seems to remind her about using her other litter boxes more often - she'll stop and paw at it for a bit and then trot over to one of the regular boxes and go. She hasn't seemed blocked or distressed at all, just ... absentminded, I guess?

I have just weaned my cat off Prozac after 6 years. He was on a compounded liquid 2 ml per day. He used pee 2 x per day but now after 2 weeks without it he is peeing 4 times a day which scared me, until I saw this! He used to pee 3-4 times a day but he was on Prozac so long I forgot. Maybe his pees are back to normal. Thank you!

Psycho Update
He is having some issues after being off Prazac for a month. He has gone back to crying like he did before and now if I don t clean the litter box immediately after he goes it s non stop meowing until I do. He crus during the night so we can t sleep.
I spoke to the vet and we are putting him back on the Prozac. We will try a lower dose to see if it will help calm him but still keep him active. Please send good vibes our way...

My 2 year old cat Isaac has always been a high anxiety kitty and an easily stimulated kitty, so much so that when he is playing or agitated, all of his fur stands on end! We recently moved and for the next year I will be alone with the kitty until my husband retires. It was really a hard move for Isaac and he ended up having a bout of Pancreatits. My husband comes up on weekends, but between the move and Isaac missing my husband, he stopped eating for a couple days. When I called the vet, she informed me that cats can't go more than a day or two at most without eating without causing potential liver problems. His lver enzyme levels were over 2.5 times the normal, but after 3 weeks and also being on an appetite stimulant, all returned to normal ....sort of. He still was having a hard time with the new environment and wasn't eating well. More tests and an ultrasound revealed Pancreatits . Now it's been 3 plus months and he has been put on Fluoxetine for anxiety, with the hope that I can drive back to where my husband lives 3 hours away.....for a week long visit. My concern is that Isaac is back to his normal eating, but now he isn't peeing as often. He used to pee 3-4 times a day and now it's once every 12-17 hours. He's on a very low dose at 1.25mg. We started at 2.5, but he wasn't eating or drinking much after 7 days, so my vet said to half the dose. Within a few days he was eating and drinking more, but the peeing wasn't getting better. Has anyone had this happen and then had it resolve while the cat is still on the Fluoxetine. I'm worried that it will be bad for his kidneys to retain the urine for so long. His vet says it's not a common side effect and she doesn't know what to expect. She said I should offer him more fluids, but he has a fountain and 2 other sources. I don't think he needs to drink more, it seems he has no sense of urgency and when he does go, it's like twice his normal.

My kitty has been on fluoxetine for 6 yrs and goes 2x a day. I recently tried to ween him off but as I did he started peeing 3 - 4 times a day. He had to go back on it and he s back to 2x per day. In the beginning he would hold urine longer but we figured out the best dose and now he is stable.
1 1/2 yrs ago he had a UTI and I put him on Cosequin to help the bladder wall. He s been fine since.

If you don't mind me asking, why is your kitty on Prozac? My Isaac has always peed 3-4 times a day and now it's 2 in 24 hours, which is very low considering he was doing the 3-4 from when I got up at 630 am - 12 midnight. Though he is peeing twice in 24 hours, some days it's that he pees at 9-10 am and then not again until after I'm in bed....and I'm up til 1-1:30 am. His vet says 2 times a day ( while I'm awake) is ideal and that holding it for 15 or more hours is not great. The Prozac has this effect and it can lead to UTI's and bladder wall adhesions, so I was hoping that this would subside as he adjusted to the meds. He's only been on it 2 week. I read another post about a cat that was on the med for several years and as soon as he was taken off it he went back to peeing 3-4 times a day. My vet is concerned about his long periods without peeing. The longest was 18 hours and he peed so much!

Psycho is very nervous and without it he would get UTIs Prozac has helped him. I give him Cosequin and it helps protect the bladder from inflammation. He has been on it 6 yrs.

Hello, I know this is a very old post, but in the odd chance you see this I would greatly appreciate a response!
my cat has been put on fluoxetine (for 5 days now) and is having the exact same issue you described. Not peeing for about 36 hours, but not seeming distressed at all. No straining, still eating and playing.

this occurred when he was on clomicalm for a similar amount of time too. I took him to the vet, but he peed on the way. They told me to stop the meds and try fluoxetine instead.
Just wondering if this issue resolved for you. Did you cat adjust to the fluoxetine, and how long did it take for his urine habits to return to normal?

kind regards!

Attiboy, I am sorry your cat is having issues. Honestly it's been so long ago that I forget the end result. Good luck.
