I adopted my cat last December, at which time, she had a rabies vaccine. .I thought she had a distemper too but according to her chart, she did not. However, when she was brought from the shelter, the vet realized that she'd already been spayed. If that's the case, then she must have had, at least, a rabies vaccine, if not a distemper too, prior to coming to the shelter, which means that she had two sets of rabies shots and possibly a distemper before getting another rabies before I brought her home. She was estimated to be about a year old at the time, so that's two sets of vaccines in one year.

I am concerned that she had two rabies shots last year. If that's the case, should she need another so soon? Can I refuse a rabies shot at this time?

She has a chronic condition, which has not been definitively confirmed as FHV, so I don't want to compromise her immune system. I also don't want to be bullied into doing something that I don't feel is right for my cat.

Because of the legalities involved, it can be a complicated decision to refuse the rabies vaccine. In this case I think you should bring up your concerns with the vet and discuss the options.

Well you control what is administered to your cat not the vet. If she has an illness a good vet wouldn't vaccinate your cat for anything until you cat is no longer ill. That's vet 101. Rabies may be and exception I am not sure but my vet makes me come back for all of them of my cat is sick on a day they may be due. If your cat is sick and your vet still wants to vaccinate I think it's your right to refuse until your cat is heathy again.

My IBD cat hasn't been vaccinated in years.  I've always been told by vets that a compromised immune system = no more vaccinations.  Now my FHV+ cats do indeed get their vaccinations, but we're on a three year protocol.  Even the one-year rabies is only given once every three years.  I've never had a vet argue it, even if they don't personally agree with the theory that cats don't need yearly vax.  I tell them "they're on the three year protocol" and that's that.

You're the owner, your wishes should be respected (within reason, of course).

You can certainly refuse the rabies vaccine, the law has provisions for exceptions for cats with compromised immune systems, among other things.  And, as the thirdname pointed out, Rabies is typically a three year vaccine.

At any rate, the vet isn't the vaccination police and the pet owner always has the option of refusing vaccinations.  But of course saying that to the vet without feeling like your being adversarial is the challenge.   If they argue (I honestly think they'll agree with you)  just say that, yes,  you hear what they're saying but you'd like some time to think about it.  Then just move on to another question.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to ask the vet if they'll give the vaccine in the tail.
