...with the cats...
I had 3 cat's but now have 2 and my friends and family call me a crazy cat lady.
It's not so much how many cats I have but all the cat "things" I have. I have my cat's pictures in frames, cat quotes on canvases a cat bag and cushion and some really nice pewter cat ornaments. Oh and a large wooden cat that sits in my kitchen.
Oh well.........

mickNsnicks2mom, I LOVE that sign! My hubby looked over at me while I was reading it and asked me what I was smiling at.
i actually just happened on that sign while browsing at etsy. i do believe i'll be buying a copy of that print.

The most cats I've ever had inside was 8 ferals that I adopted. I did not consider myself a crazy cat lady because I took good care of them. I also had a feral colony of about 20 cats. I only have two of them cats left now and I had my last two ferals put to sleep last year due to illness.  Once Muffy and Muffin are gone I will not get any more cats because I am just not able to care for them anymore.

I think you become crazy when you take in more than you can afford, ie food, housing, medical, etc. Some people take in cats and cannot afford proper nutrition or vet care, like hoarders. I do not think there is an actual number that makes you crazy, just the quality of life you can or cannot offer. I have two cats but would consider another two when my two old dogs pass. The reason is cost. Elderly animals are expensive due to medications, vet bills, special foods. I believe every animal in your care deserves the best medical treatment to the end of their lives, not dumped in a shelter because they develop age related problems.

I agree. In 2012 my vet bills came to over $10,000 and I only had 5 cats that year with only minor health problems. I was lucky I had the money in my savings. After Muffin and Muffy are gone I will not get any more pets because I have arthritis and I can barely take care of myself, much less a another pet. I also don't have anybody to take care of my pets if I should die while they are in my care.

I have a feeling I'm well on my way to being crazy, but I don't think my cats have much to do with it! I know I must be a 'crazy cat lady' especially when the person's eyes start to glaze over when I'm talking about my cats, or my husband says "is that ALL you talk about?!" I just can't believe people aren't fascinated with cats the way I am. I feel sorry for people who don't or can't love animals, they contribute so much to our lives. Especially people who say they 'hate' cats!  :jaw: How could they!!! I don't particularly like dogs, but I would never hate or purposely hurt one!
Ah, the glazed over look...I get that all the time at work. In my defense, my co-worker asked me about the cat all the time, but hmmm, she doesn't seem to as much anymore. Well, she loves cats too, I just have to let her get a word in edgewise once in awhile :lol3: And my husbands eye roll when he realizes what the conversation is about is priceless too.

I have received the crazy cat lady title with just my two...but my cats don't care.

You sound like a very kind person to care for all those cats.

We're crazy cat people, though I don't think it's because of the number of cats. No, we've gone through some hard times financially and healthwise, and there are times when we haven't been able to afford everything - so we've lived on ramen noodles and denied ourselves care in order to care for the cats properly.

oh Canada~
No shame in living off of ramen noodles. After serving the cats their raw, I made myself ramen with eggs and vegetables tonight. You can totally still make a half-decent meal out of it. Sometimes I find buying packs of ramen in itself can be pricier than it should be, especially for being the stereotypical poor and starving student food.

But that's a whole 'nother subject.

Thanks, bonepicker. I love all animals, especially my cats.

Can someone tell me what does purraise mean? I noticed that I have 2 of them and I don't see where anybody else has them.

Also it says that I have "no thumbs up yet". If you guys don't like my post I can go elsewhere.

I pay no attention to what people say about my having  cats(3). People will call you a crazy cat lady if you have just 1 cat if you happen to mention anything funny they did or a concern about their health. I have children, I am crazy about as well. I know people think I am nuts BUT,I did go to school and study behavior so it should surprise no one in my life that I dote on my cats. I doted on my dog to while she was alive.

If they don't like it oh well they are not living my life and I can't dictate their interests.

As far as how many make you "crazy" I  would say one more than you can care for. I will stay with 3, mostly because I  promised my husband and also because I am primarily the one that takes care of, plays with them etc. If others here were nuts about the idea of more I would do it in a heartbeat.

Since my wife is definitely crazy and we have 2 cats, that must be the answer.

Mind you, it's not the number, but the way she says they understand every word she says, and she regularly holds conversations with them.

I think that's crazy. And the cats agree with me.

i already know I'm a crazy cat lady, I have 3 cats that im crazy about and i love to talk about them. I do not have children and its a personal choice I don't want children. My hubby loves cats too so it's all good. I don't think there's a certain number. I think if you can afford the vet bills, keep up on the litter/food. love them and take care of them than that's all that matters. My personal number is 4, only because at that point the litter gets to be a bit much if you know what i mean lol.  I know for sure if i ever won a ton of money like the power ball and lets just say i didn't need to work anymore. I'd quit my job, volunteer at an animal shelter and get very involved in helping the cats. I'd also work hard at something very positive to make a difference in my area helping out with finding cats homes and work towards putting an end to the poor cats that die on death row in the shelters. And of course 4 would no longer be my maximum number!
