I guess the pumpkin pretty high on the ingredient list is what makes this food a bit higher in carbs (noted earlier) than some others.  Still, pumpkin is not too big of a problem I don't think.  Cranberry seems a bit dubious, I don't know.  But I'd sooner see cranberries in there than carrageenan.

I'll have to nudge the local store since apparently they aren't selling to online stores so far someone said.

Wanted to add, Mauri venison has also become more well liked by my cats.

I added Mauri kangaroo and venison to my cat's diet. She has been on Answers raw chicken diet, which is excellent, but they don't offer variety. Now she's on the raw and canned, since its also difficult for me to get raw cat food in any other brands (my holistic pet store caters mostly to dogs). Anyway, my cat developed a UTI recently, and I was worried that it had something to do with the addition of the Mauri to her diet. Thoughts?

@PinkyBaby  I'm not sure about the UTI, never had a cat that had this problem and not certain the causes. I maybe don't feed Mauri as much as you might, but do feed least couple times a week to two cats. Based on my experiences with my recent adopted senior cat who came with with kidney issues, I would suspect raw food would more likely be the cause. I have tried every form of raw with m cat with kidney problems and they all cause vomit, some more violently and sooner than others, all brands, rad, primal, stella, etc. Doesn't even matter what meat it is, her body just can't handle raw. Have  relative with 3 cats with kidney issues and all 3 vomited raw cat food on first try, this was a raw food sample from pet store, not homemade. My younger cat does not have any problems with raw though. I add water to all my cats food, in case they don't drink enough, never had a cat with UTI. If it happens though, will let you know.

chalupa chalupa thank you for the insight. I will continue to monitor Pinky. I'm feeding her one can of Mauri in the mornings. I have a few cans of Nature's Variety, but have been hesitant to try it because Pinky has had a history of digestive problems. She has tolerated raw and Mauri pretty well.

@PinkyBaby, if this helps, weruva's chicken, duck steak, lamb. not fish only flavors are a main staple in my cats diet and they never have any issues with it. Also Hound and Gatos lamb (the only flavor my pet store has) goes over well. If you figure out what causedthe UTI, please let me know, since Mauri and raw are new to my cats diet, would be interested to know if they might not be good for them

@Pinkybaby  I buy mostly  the pouches too, they are so easy to use, but get their cans too

chalupa chalupa I'll try to figure out what caused the UTI. Pinky has eaten Mauri for less than a week, and I noticed the UTI symptoms two days ago. The vet couldn't really tell me the cause, as they couldn't get a urine sample from Pinky today. Also, Pinky had been on the raw only for two months and was doing great. She never got sick, and loves the taste

maybe pick up some weruva or some other food like maybe fussie cat and give Mauri a break, just in case. Hope Pinky feels better fast!

You said your kitty has digestive problems. Do you feed a high fiber diet? High fiber diets can cause a UTI.

josiegirl josiegirl Pinky was on a high fiber prescription diet prior to December. I switched her to 100% raw, and started adding canned (Mauri) to her diet last week for variety. I had also been giving her 1 tablespoon of pure pumpkin daily. I've stopped the pumpkin because Mauri has pumpkin in it. Pinky's digestive problems seem to have been resolved completely (she had chronic diarrhea since she was a kitten). Not sure how much fiber is in the Mauri though.

My Josie was sometimes constipated so I upped her fiber content and she developed a UTI less than a week after doing that.

I would stop giving the Mauri for now. I mentioned in an earlier post that the kangaroo was a little higher in carbs than other foods I feed my kitties so maybe that contributed to your problem.

I would also stay away from canned food that has more than 5% carbs. These include gravy style foods and food in pouches. High carb food is responsible for a whole host of chronic diseases, including UTIs.

Most commercial raw diets are very low in carbs so you should be okay feeding that to Pinky. (I don't know what brand she eats)

josiegirl josiegirl Yes, Pinky is being treated for the UTI. She's been on Answers raw chicken formula, which she usually inhales, but now is more hesitant because she is expecting kangaroo or venison. I started adding Mauri to add variety and because her diarrhea didn't return. I'm concerned that feeding the raw chicken only will cause her to eventually develop an allergy. Chalupa mentioned trying Weruva. What are some other canned varieties you might recommend? Unfortunately, there aren't any other raw proteins (other than Nature's Variety) available in my area.

I might also add that I spoke with the people at Answers, and they recommended adding fermented fish stock a while ago. She was having this as a supplement to help her colitis symptoms. Do fish products cause UTIs?

Fish is not normally a good food to feed because the high phosphorus content can lead to UTIs but I'm not sure of fish stock. I tried this with my cats but they turned their noses up at it.

As far as recommending other canned foods I will look into it. I'm not sure which foods have novel proteins besides natures variety instinct.
