Hi everyone I'm new to this site hoping you can give me some advice :)
I have a 2.5 yr old boy JB who we had to rush to the ER last week turns out his bladder was completely blocked and he had struvite crystals. They catherterised him and kept him hooked up to IV for 48 hrs before we took him home. Over the wkend he was catheterised again and stayed at the vets for 24 hrs as I noticed that he was growling and not peeing again. Turns out that his urethra was spasming and this was causing him pain.
He's been home again for 3 days now and is on Prozasin, Clavulox and Dentralene along with a liquid anti spasmodic.
It appears that when the drugs wear off he has some pain again and that's when he seems to growl a little. However he is peeing (not as much as normal but getting there!), eating and acting like his normal self but not pooping very much and when he does pee he licks himself for a minute or so afterwards.
Does this seem like normal recovery behavior? He's on the prescription wet food only which he loves so I don't think there is a chance of another blockage.
How long is the penis/urethra usually sensitive and sore for after having the catheter removed?
Thank you!

We had a male who experienced multiple blockages that required two catheters in a weeks time. When he got home, for 3 - 4 days  he cleaned himself carefully after urination. A catheter can sometimes cause a little trauma when inserted or if it gets tugged or moved too much while in place, so that could certainly be the problem. Watch for urinary tract infection which would cause foul or ammonia smelling urine, frequent urination or bloody/cloudy urine - in this case another vet visit is in order.

In our case we never found out what caused the blockages and he never had a problem again, but we did stop feeding him dry food after that..

I hope your cat gets better soon!

Thanks Eric!
JB seems to be doing a lot better now :) I guess it just takes time.

Great! I was wondering how JB was doing. Really scary when something is wrong with our little friends, I am sure you are feeling very relieved!
