Sure pet insurance is awesome, but you still have to pay full upfront and the
those papers processed, then wait for some of that money to come back. Some people can't afford to chuck a big amount of money like that. You never know when a cat can give you a pricey vet bill. Many many many other bills to pay not just the vet bills. That's America.

@Pyro Burning.
Can't get cat insurance here. I had dog and he died during an operation that had cost over a $1,000 but I got all of it back which was a surprise.
I'll ask again about cats but this is a very doggy country.

2dogs+my bfs dog, 1 cat, 1 red tail boa, 3 leopard geckos, 1 bearded dragon, 1 rabbit, 3 rats, and 1 carpet python.. i also plan on getting Crested Geckos..

My best friend probably has HUNDREDS of fish of all different kinds, 2 gargoyle geckos, 2 crested geckos, 4 cats, 3 parakeets, 1 bronze winged pionus (parrot), 1 carpet python, 6 ball pythons, and some shrimp

It REALLY depends on the person,All my animals have a lot of time spent with them and a lot of space, they get the best food and  get a lot of attention, there cages are kept clean and i still get a bit of free time :)

I know some people who get very overwhelmed by pets, and with smaller pets, often forget about them :( and neglect when it comes to vet care. i would say "too many" is when the person starts neglecting the animals care.

Do fish really count? Sorry I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I always imagined a pet being someone u could have a two way relationship with, you know, emotion wise. You could love yr fish but can they love u back? This is a genuine question. I love all animals

Yes. I believe fish do count. They are just less maintenance. No need to walk them, bathe them or clean their litter daily, etc. No serious vet bill, that's for sure.
You can leave them without any kind of interaction(besides feeding) and they would do fine. No anxiety, no depression.
And if people are really up for the task to make them more 'pet', you can actually train fish to do tricks, like go through rings of hoops or even play underwater soccer. It just takes time.

When pets became burden instead of relaxing companion, then there are too many pets. Also space, time, financial burden varies individually so exact number of pets where this limit is reached varies case by case.

I have currently 5 indoor cats which of two visit outdoors short periods daily.

To provide enough entertainment for them it takes several hours in a day, feeding and cleaning litter boxes is taking good deal of time too, so for me it is plenty of enough pets, I was quite happy with two, but there was need of rescue and I ended up having quite more.

I have five cats, two gerbils(recently lost one
I adopted them after they had spent months at a shelter due to their advanced age.), and fish(also all adopted..from craigslist.., and recently lost one.  One fish in particular, an african cichlid, has a definite bond with one of my cats).  Ideally, I would be able to take in another cat or dog as a companion for one of my high energy cats.  However, my financial circumstances have changed/are changing, as have the needs of my cats.  I have three seniors, one of whom has chronic health problems and another has recently developed major problems as well.  When things are going well, five cats does not seem like a lot.  Right now, though, I've felt emotionally and physically exhausted from my one cat's care alone.  I'm also an "above and beyond" type when it comes to my cats and I anticipate future vet bills that will be.. enormous.  So.. five cats is it for now.  We would absolutely love to foster but are too weary of disease transmission with one of my senior's immune system.  I highly recommend it for anyone who desires more cats/kittens in their life but does not have the finances.  Until I can adopt again, I will thoroughly enjoy spoiling my five boys(Santa will be good to them this year).

We have 3 cats as of July 1st (2 indoor and 1 outdoor). It is the feeding that I find most onerous as we don't free feed. The time and money and plates are a lot.

As well I didn't realize how we would be tied down with all these pets. It does put a damper on travelling and we are postponing home renovations until we figure out what to do with them!

My neighbor has 1 dog and she cant even feed it. She never walks it and its literally under 1 year old. Its a huge german shepherd and its bark is loud. I hear when she opens her back door n yells at it to sit n move and will try n try thwn give up n throw the metal bowl to it. Its sad really cause her kids are scared of it. She has 4 under the age of 6 . It barks constantly I have called animal control so many times n they never answer the door. The dog only barks for the owners not at people because it can hear or see people. It hears me when im out back n growls. So in this persons situation this dog is too much. Dogs take work n she never walks it . She doesnt train it. She yells sit sit n get down n im like huh??? She shouldve gotten a cat.

Who knows what she might do to a cat?
The animal people should just post a notice in her letterbox and take poor dog instead of leaving it to suffer.

A young high energy dog, particularly a large dog, will bark constantly when they aren't exercised or even walked.  That frustration and pent up energy can easily turn into aggression.  Of course a large powerful dog can do a lot of damage if he becomes aggressive which means he will be deemed vicious and euthanized.  Animal control will be more than happy to get involved then.  So sad.

Ya their kids scream when they see it. Sometimes she walks it through the house to the front and I can see the kids standing on the couch trying to get away. Theyre petrified. And shes too ignorant to see it . The dog was a little puppy a few months ago n now its huge ! It barks from 4pm till 7 pm not the hours animal control comes by .

I have 3 cats. For many years I had 2 dogs and 2 cats.I think 3 is good for now. I would like to have another dog but, my hubby while he thinks dogs are fine isn't crazy about them. He does like the cats but I am their companion. If my husband was enthusiastic about another pet ( or two) I would be thrilled. In all honesty I can give a good amount of attention to the cats I am often pressed for time. I would feel to guilty on a daily basis if I couldn't give they attention my pets deserve so I guess 3 is it.Have to admit I wish my hubby would become an 'animal' person if he was into it I would definitely have more.

Even the most well behaved dogs cant be left alone so a day visiting friends is impossibe. And not all friends want a dog at their house, not even a small one. Also with more and more big dogs being dog agressive if I chose to adopt a chihuahau again shed be a target . Which isnt fair for the poor thing.

I only have one cat at the moment but one high energy teenaged cat in a one bedroom house is more than enough for me! If money and space weren't an issue I'd love to get him a companion. But as is I'm at my kitty limits.

I know someone who has 9 cats, and abt to get his 10th. He's a college student, highly ambitious, works for his college also. He's kind of a sucker though when it comes to cats, he's rescued some cats from the street, stating he didn't want them to be out in the cold. His cats are all healthy. He lives in a three bedroom apartment and his mom and sister help take care of the cat family. His cats eat 9-lives and friskies, which bothers me a lot but I can't judge him bec he's doing his best. When I first met him, I thought he was a bit crazy, maybe even a cat collecter, but I was so wrong. He's a very nice and kind hearted person who LOVES to help others. He's also a volunteer for a non-profit organization. I've tried to tell him that he has to draw the line here and not adopt any more. I'm not sure he'll
listen to me.

When my parents' friends come over, I have to lock up my cats because they don't like cats. I thought it was a bit unfair and I've had some arguments with my parents, but they say it's better not to subject our cats to their insensitive comments but it's not like the cats can understand them. Whatever. I know my parents love our cats, they help take care of them and one of the cats is madly in love with them. He follwos them around all day and sleeps with them in their bed. I get so jealous :/
