Hello all,

I had my cat at the vet Tuesday for her VRCP booster. Friday afternoon she started sneezing. Other than that she is normal, eating alright. I took her to the vet today and the doctor said it could be a reaction to the vaccine or that she has a respiratory infection. The lungs did sound normal though, so nothing out of the ordinary. Sneezing when shis awake is 15-30 minutes interval and when she wakes up. No discharge from the nose.

I wonder is it possible to get such a reaction from the vaccine? I read about vaccine reaction here on the forum but the posts all spoke of fever and eating disorders.

Thanks for any hint

Do you mean the FVR vaccine? Was it given intra-nasally or as a shot? I know from human flu vaccines that intra-nasal vaccines can and do cause some sneezing and congestion, as the live virus is put into the nose. The shot can't do that though.

It's an interesting question. Maybe you can call your vet and ask them? Do please post back if you find a definitive answer. I'm curious!

If it was given as an injection (FVRCP) do you know if it was the live or killed version?  Vaccines are hard on immune systems if a cat is ill, and if she was about to come down with something it may have put her over the edge, or it may also be coincidence.

This reputable site mentions that sneezing and cold symptoms can occur in some instances.

No it was given through the nase, I dont know if it was a life vaccine though. She is doing a lot better today though, only a few minor sneezes. It was quite remarkable for two days and quickly went down today.

I went to the vet saturday and she gave me antibiotics to prevent secondary infectinos in case it is a viral infectin of the lungs but said there is nothing one can do about the virus itself and we just have to wait. The lungs sounded good so she said no immediate danger.

Hopefully this is going away quickly now. I have to keep her separated from my other cat in case it is a virus, so it's a bit awkward, but I can manage

Thanks for the link by the way, I didnt know that nasal vaccinations are life virus and the cat could pass that on to other cats. the vet should have warned me. Well I hope everything is well since the two hardly ever meet directly, they are kept seperate through a mesh door since one is outside only and the other is inside only

Yeah, intra-nasal vaccines are usually live vaccines. That's not a bad thing. Live vaccines usually generate a stronger immune systems. I think vets should tell people about potential side effects though, just for them to be ready when they see them.

It wen better steadily, it's a week now and I think the sneezing is pretty much gone, thanks everyone for the input. I really think it must have been from the vaccine. the only other possibility would be that she got it from the doctor's office when we were there fore the vaccination, but I hope not, so I guess the vaccine was the most likely cause. The course of the symptoms was really from heave during the first two weeks down to rather light and then gone.

I also put a heating pad under her favorite blanket to rise her body temperature to help fight the virus, if it was one. Since she had no natural fever, I thought maybe rising the body temperature may be helpfulbecause I read once that viruses are so specialized that one or two degree off the normal body temperature of the host body can already help to make their life cycle harder. Not sure if it helped, but I thought I post all my measures here in case others run into the same situation.

"first two weeks" should be "first two days"

Even better!

It's hard to tell with viruses. As far as I know, yes, they can be affected by temperature, but it really depends on the specific strain. I know that with flu viruses, different strains like different temperatures. That's why some strains are more virulent - they like things warmer so they do most of their replication (and damage) down in the lungs.
