This is going to be a really long question and explanation. I'm going to thank you ahead of time if you read through all of this.

I am leaving Florida on December 6th to visit my mother for Christmas. I have two cats that my mother is taking care of up in Indiana. Harley and Whisper are more work than all 11 of the cats who are currently living with me combined. They are super finicky and they just recently stopped eating because Purina stopped making One Beyond in the yellow bag. They only have Purina One Beyond Naturals now and the cats hate it. So now, I've tried Purina Cat Chow, Purina One, Purina One Beyond Naturals, Friskies, Goodlife Recipe, Nature's Recipe, Natural Choice, Blue Buffalo (Indoor, Wilderness, and Freedom), Iams, Wellness, Whiskas, Science Diet, and Evo. ALL of these food Harley and Whisper will not eat. I don't know what to do. We both have spent so much money on them and I'm lost. My mom is going through a rough patch and I have run out of money due to vet bills and house renovations. We can't afford $10-$12 for 3lbs of cat food. I think the highest thing we can afford is about $20 for 12-15lbs of food. I don't know what else to go with that the cats won't turn up. Ugh!

Also, as a side note, I cannot feed them wet food. They get wet food as a treat and they love it, but the problem is my mother's work schedule. My mother leaves for work at 4 am and doesn't get back until 8 pm (10-12 pm/am if she decides to work over). She can't give them wet food and have it last throughout the day. She gives them half a can and they don't even eat all of it in one sitting. It gets hard before they're ready to eat again. This is while she's home. So, what she does is she puts hard food into a dog bowl and leaves for work. Lately, she's been noticing that they've been taking minimal amounts of food to eat. She's been having to get the wet food (they'll only eat Friskies wet food) because they won't eat anything else.

An added note, Whisper is a hog and usually eats any flavor of food whenever it's food that she likes. Harley doesn't care for seafood or shellfish. He likes real tuna and shrimp, but he stays away from the dry and wet varieties of salmon, tuna, whitefish, crab, etc.

I'm trying to find an affordable food that the cats will eat. he cats have been turning up expensive food, so I've been debating some lower grade to see if they like it. Problem with that is Harley and Whisper (siblings) have a genetic gastrointestinal issue. The veterinarians we've seen can't diagnose them, but they both get sick whenever they eat and it gets so severe to where Harley throws up blood and Whisper has seizures. They have no problems with wet food, though. I don't know what to do for my babies. They're both going to be 9 years old in March of 2015 and they don't deserve to keep suffering like this.

Is there a food that is dry that is like wet food, or is there a semi-moist food that will last longer than wet food and still help with Harley and Whisper's digestive tract? Also, I've thought about food allergies, but it doesn't add up. I've tried so many different foods with so many different ingredients and flavors, and I'm not seeing anything consistent within the ingredients list. I honestly believe that heir stomachs just can't handle dry food. BUT, even with thinking this, they still did great onto the Purina One Beyond (yellow bag) and hardly ever got sick. If they got sick, it was from hairballs, but they never threw up food or blood and whisper didn't have seizures.

I'm at my wits end. I don't know what to do anymore.

Can someone help me, please?

You CAN feed them wet food, you choose not to.  Your mom's work schedule shouldn't matter.  Give them wet food twice a day or 3x if you want, do it when you eat and they should be fine.  Why can't you  do this?

The OP is in Florida and her mom (and the 2 cats) are in Indiana. From what I have gathered from Kiara's post, it does not seem like there is anyone else at the home besides her mother to feed these 2 cats and her mother is gone from 4 am to around 8 pm or later sometimes. That's a long time to leave wet food out. It also would restrict her being able to feed wet multiple times a day. She is going to visit her mom in December so I guess it's possible that she could give the cats multiple feedings of wet while she is there but that would be a temporary solution to a permanent problem once she goes back to Florida.

@Kiara1125, I understand about having finicky eaters. Mine did not like the dry food the shelter recommended and since I only feed wet now, I know what you mean about not being able to leave it out and have it still be edible. I also work longer hours sometimes but try to make it home as close to their feeding time as I can. I often have the opportunity to work more hours than I do but I don't because I know the furkids are waiting on me for their dinner. I don't have anyone at home right now to assist with feeding either so I do sympathize with your mom's situation and in no way am I judging her. She's doing the best she can under the circumstances. I don't know about a wet/dry food hybrid like a moist food that you would give a dog, maybe they do make something like that. I will look and see if I can find something.

Hello! :wavey:

This is going to sounds a little crazy, but what type of plate/bowl do you feed them on?

Due to good allergies we had to switch Abby's food and she HATED it at first and would barely eat. We tried putting the food on a flat plate instead of a bowl and she will now eat it that way. I've talked to my vet about it and she said it isn't totally crazy. They offer the cats that are there for surgery and observation food on flat plates as it seems to encourage them to eat.

ETA - I see you mentioned dog bowl. Try putting the new food on a plate.

Also, would it be possible for your mother to give a small amount of wet when she leaves and gets home, but leave dry out for when she is gone?

@AbbysMom Well, my mom puts all food onto a plate whenever she's home and dry food in the dog bowl while she's gone. They still prefer the wet.

@Kat0121 Thank you so much for understanding and clearing things up for the other member. I was taken aback with how abrasive the message was. But, they didn't fully understand what I was saying, so it's understandable. You're right that I can feed them wet food when I visit, but it's a temporary fix. I wish that my mother's work schedule was more flexible, but she's an electrician at a steel mill, so she's always busy. I just hate this because the cats are going to refuse dey food for another two weeks before I get there.

Also, @StephenQ, it will be extremely easy for me to feed my cats 2-3 times a day. I've done it before with wet food. I'm trying to find a solution for when I move back and it's just my mother again. It's not fair to the cats to eat once a day. She could give them food when she leaves at 4 am, but then it's sitting out and getting disgusting, along with attracting bugs. If she feeds thems at 8 pm (or later if she works over) then they'll only be eating pretty much once a day, and I know from experience that they won't be hungry enough to eat all of their food at 4 am before my mom leaves for work if she chooses to pick up the wet food after she feeds them. It's not fair to the cats to go 16 hours or possibly more without food. Don't you think?

Sorry if this post looks weird. There's an incompatibility in between the site and my phone.

I just want to apologize to everyone and especially the OP @Kiara1125 for the tone in my above post.  It was neither gentle nor kind, and by way of explanation, when I wrote it I had just returned from a large scale dog fighting rescue operation in the USA and i was tired, and stressed out.  Upon reflection I probably shouldn't have posted anywhere at TCS until I had "recovered".  This explanation is not an excuse and so I offer my apology without qualification.

Not a problem. I can understand not taking the time to wind down. I've kinda blown up on forums before. It's not a big deal and I appreciate you taking the time to post a formal apology.

Sometimes you can get small sample bags of cat food to try, especially at pet supply stores. Lifetime and Summit are two brand of inexpensive dry food that aren't poor quality. Nutro is a bit more expensive but not unreasonable and is pretty palatable. They make a line called Max which is quite economical and most cats will eat it.

Thank you for your kind response and understanding. We all care about cats and animals here and it is good and helpful to share the love. I'm happy to apologize, there is no pride in being wrong.

Ok, so I've been looking and thinking about shopping online for cat food. I was thinking about trying either:

Doctors Foster and Smith's Adult Cat Food Advanced Hairball Control Chicken & Brown Rice

or

Canidae All Life Stages Dry Cat Food

or

Taste of the Wild[emoji]174[/emoji] Rocky Mountain Feline Formula with Roasted Venison & Smoked Salmon

What do you guys think would be the best dry cat food to try for my cats? I was thinking either TOTW or Canidae, but I wanted to see if I could stop Harley and Whisper's hairballs. They throw up about 3 times a day. Whisper throws up food, so I have to make sure that she eats more slowly and probably less at a time. Harley just throws up hairballs or bile, so I don't know what to do to fix that.

Thoughts? Advice?

You can try adding boiled water to the dry food so it becomes semi-moist. Sometimes that will slow the cat down and help stop the vomiting. At that point, you can mash it and smear it around the bowl so the cat has to lick it up. You can try putting a large, heavy rock in the middle of the dish and force the cats to eat around that.

I FINALLY found a food they like! After not having any success with Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit, I tried something else. I went to Petsmart last night and got a bag of Simply Nourish Chicken and Oatmeal Indoor Cat Food. They LOVED it!! I'm a bit upset that I had to spend $20 for only 7 lbs of cat food, but hopefully my mother won't mind sticking with this food. I'll have to check to see if my local pet store has it so I don't have to drive for almost an hour to get to Petsmart/Petco.

But, at least there's success! No one has thrown up yet (Harley did yesterday when he ate a salmon paté, so I thin he's allergic to salmon or at least seafood in general - there must be a reason why he refuses to eat seafood so often) and I'm super happy with everything. Hopefully things will keep going good for them!

I'm going to focus Harley on the dry food because it's pretty much the only thing he will eat now. He's been refusing wet food for 3 days, so I want him to eat - even if it is the dry food. I'm focusing Whisper on the wet food because she has gotten fatter since I've been gone. I don't know how much of a difference I can make in 5 weeks, though. Even if I do make a difference, she's probably going to gain the weight back whenever I leave. She gained several pounds within 5 months. What will happen when I'm gone for over a year? I'm worried.

Glad you found something they both like. Just wanted to let you know that Simply Nourish is a Petsmart brand cat food so you will only be able to buy it at Petsmart.

Thank you.
I wouldn't feed just dry to male cat
He hasn't eaten any wet food I've given him. I will try the Simply Nourish wet food today. Other then that, he won't eat anything.
