The vet said there was liquid leaking from the edema/wound. I saw it for myself the other day; it looks like water droplets/sweat seeping through the skin since there is no broken skin at this point. The vet also said the necrotic skin will probably start falling off (bleh). She's on antibiotics and pain meds right now, so hopefully they help. The good thing is that she's maintained her appetite through every thing. She will have to stay at the vet for a bit longer to gauge the seriousness of her wound. Thank you for the well wishes!
I hope Karma can come home with you soon, but I think it's definitely better for her to stay there until they can figure out how serious her infection is.

Did they say whether they can remove the dead tissue?  Would they have to put her under to do that? Or could they do it with a local anesthetic? Maybe they're waiting for it to clear with antibiotics.  I'm not sure what the protocol is on that.  My girl had a significant amount of dead tissue.  I think it happened quickly too.

Hope Karma gets better soon!

@ForrestMeows

I totally agree that she should stay there till she's out of the woods with this wound. In all honesty the wound looks bad–like a giant pus-filled blister (although the vet said it's not a pocket of fluid even though that's what it looks like; it's actually subcutaneous swelling). They can remove the dead tissue and I have already signed the consent form to do surgery on her if need be. And she would definitely have to go under for that. The problem is that the wound is huge relative to her body. It covers about a third of her body. The best case scenario is that she would reabsorb the dead skin (these are the vet's words) and it would scab over. Worst case scenario is that she needs multiple surgeries to remove the dead skin...and these surgeries are extremely expensive ($2k) and it's probably hard on her as well. At this point we are waiting to see what happens. The wound is already starting to open/slough a little at the crease of her leg, and the vet really thinks it will continue to slough. It's all very nerve-wracking, but the good news is that she no longer has a fever and has maintained a great appetite this entire time. The financial burden has also been very stressful but I do believe she is getting the best care possible. While the situation is still critical, the vet said baby animals have a tremendous capacity to heal, so I am really hoping she can pull through this. She was able to overcome her kidney problems, hopefully she can recover from this. We visit her every day and just hope for the best.

@Reba  Thank you! She is quite a cutie.

I'd also like to say thank you to everyone else for being so supportive. I am new here but it really helps to know that other people love cats as much as you do and can empathize with your situation.

I'm so happy that her fever has gone away and she's eating.  That's great news!

I really hope she recovers without the need for surgery(ies).  Poor baby girl.  She seems strong, which is good.  I'm praying that she pulls through this as quickly and issue free as possible.  Once you take her home, make sure you have a thermometer for her so you can monitor her temperature and make sure she does not get a fever.  Hang in there!  Karma, you can do this!!!

Is there any way you could start a fundraiser? There are sites to take donations ... I am sure if people saw what you are going through they would be willing to help.

Yes, I'm probably going to set it up tonight. Any little bit helps!

Oh hu

Just wanted to give an update on Karma (as I've named her). Her renal values have stabilized and she is doing a lot better. It seems as if she has a good chance of making it. Yesterday her red blood cells were still pretty low so we decided to give her a blood transfusion and that perked her right up. The next step is to start weaning her off of fluids and hopefully she will be able to remain stable. She is still very, very swollen in her belly from the trauma, and the vet said there is a possibility that there could be some kind of skin damage from blood loss on the area of impact (I think; I wasn't too clear on that one). But hopefully things will clear up. I want to take her home already! It's been a very stressful (and crazy expensive) ride, but all will be worth it once she's better.
Oh my god, what a pretty little baby. I know it is taking a toll on you and your husband financially, but heaps of best wishes and good things on you both. You are both amazing human beings to take this little baby into your care.

I currently work at a pet store. I don't have much and can't do much, but if at all possible, I would like to put a small kitty gift pack together for you guys for rescuing the little girl, if you don't mind. I would just throw in a few small toys, cat nip, treats, and canned food. If you would not mind, private message me and we can exchange information.

Sadly I cannot rescue myself, but I like to help what little I can. I will also donate a little bit of money to help with expenses if you can start a fundraiser.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give a little update. Karma is hanging in there. She's eating great. They feed her 6 or 7 times a day I believe and she cleans her plate every time. Her temp is a little on the high side, ranging from about 101-102 degrees, with the occasional spike to 103, but she usually comes back down quick. She is bright and alert. On the downside, her wound looks pretty awful. It is sloughing now and looks like something out of a zombie movie. I have pictures of it but I don't want to gross anyone out. The vet is still waiting for the wound to fully declare itself before deciding what to do next. She may need a skin graft. I'm not sure where they would get the donor tissue on such a tiny kitty. Fortunately her spirits are still up, which is what gives me hope that she can pull through this. I didn't have time to start up a fundraiser this weekend, but I will soon.

Here is another picture of the little cutie mid-meow. She is anxious to get out of her cage!

The wound may look awful one the dead tissue sloughs off, but if it is nice and pink/red then that's GOOD!  She  is young and will heal up.  Ask your vet if it is possible to use a silver-impregnated topical gel on the wound. Silver is a natural antibiotic and works wonders in human wounds, and kills off germs without making antibiotic resistance.  Good luck and bless you for taking in this wee one.

Thanks so much for the update. I've never done crowdfunding, but I think you could use your initial post here and upload those pictures and you'd be good to go.   She's so adorable!!!

Just by looking at her, you would never thing that she is having such health issues.  Alert looking, bright eyes.  Tiny baby with a huge fighting attitude.

Karma is so precious.  I hope and pray that she does not need surgery(ies).  Try not to stress.

I'm sorry your having such a hard time!  Hang in there!  I will keep praying for a quick and speedy recovery.  Hugs!

Edit:  It sounds like they're taking great care of Karma.  Maybe the wait and see approach will pay off.  I hope so.

Sadly Karma did not make it. She went into surgery today and when she was recovering she went into respiratory arrest and they were not able to revive her. :(

Thank you everyone for your support through this time. We're feeling very heartbroken over it.
