Any words of wisdom: I will be attempting to treat my newly rescued kitty's eye infection. This will not be fun

What if I simply can't get the ointment in?

Use warm water on a cotton ball to gentle cleanse away any goop or crusties from the eyes.  Then put just a small dab of the ointment in the OUTER CORNER of the eye, and it will spread to cover the whole eye.  If you are applying from the outer corner, he doesn't see it coming and is less likely to jump or wiggle, and since his eyes are warm and damp fro the cleaning, he is already somewhat desensitized to you working with his eyes and he will be more relaxed.  The warm cotton ball is like a mama cat's tongue to him and he will know you are cleaning him.
