So i wasn't really sure where to put this so its kind of a care issue but anyways. I'm a college student and so i brought along my kitten with me and i live in a house and his litter box and food and everything all has to be in my room. one thing is is that if the box starts to stink really bad, and other tenants in the house complain that it smells then the cat or me and the cat have to go. now it doesn't smell too bad, you can really only smell a difference if you go in my room. it doesn't stink to the high heavens but it has an odor to it. so to get to the point, i really would like ideas or know how everyone keeps the litter box smell down. I clean it every day and i use arm&hammer litter deodorizer which is like a powder that you put in the litter in case it doesn't exist in other places, i have air fresheners in my room and i was going to spray as well but seeing as the cat stays in my room, its probably not healthy for him to breathe that in. So, are there any cool ideas or options anyone has to help keep the litter smell to a low?

I have a situation where three of my cats need to stay in one room while I'm gone at work during the day.  I keep things very clean but still, as you say, there's an odor.

I recently bought an air sanitizer:
It's not cheap, but it really works.

Also, for other ideas, here's an article about keeping little box odor down:

I've found that Fresh Step non-clumping (the kind with carbon), scooped daily and changed completely once a week, is very good at odor control. Better than any clumping litter I've tried, even though most non-clumping litters are terrible at odor control. Must be the carbon. Make sure you scrub the litterbox every few changes, too, or else the odor sticks in the plastic.

I'm in a similar situation where my roommates would always complain of my room smelling and have had guests complained of my room smelling like "cat". I switched to crystal litter, put one of these in the room (), hung some activated charcoal on the box,  vacuum'd everyday, and made my own reed diffuser. I definitely went overboard but there is no litter box odor anymore.

I had the same problem too, especially fresh deposits. He is already on mostly wet, litter box is kept spick and span, but it still smells bcos he doesn't bury. I bought Animal Digest Plant Enzymes & Probiotics, his deposits didn't smell that bad after that but still smell. I had looked at this product that claims to neutralise odor but bcos its essentially made of essential oils which may be harmful to kitty, so I just used it in areas out of bound for kitty. I recently ordered , have yet to receive it. It can be sprayed into the air for airborne odor, I'm not sure yet how well it will neutralise fresh deposits.

What do you feed your cat? A low quality food isn't very digestible which means more stinky poop coming out in the litter box. Sometimes even a high quality grain free food can result in stinky poop for various reasons. One of my cats has horribly stinky poop when he eats venison
( I feed raw). I guess venison just doesn't agree with his digestive system somehow
You can post over in the nutrition forum if you want suggestions for other foods to feed.

What brand of litter are you using? Maybe a switch to a better odor absorbing litter would help some. Air freshener powders for the litter smells food to use but can be very irritating to a cat and result in a cat not using the litter box. Plain baking soda is better. Catinfo.org has a section on litter boxes and keeping odors down.

Try odor absorbers in the room where the litter box is located. I just bought some bamboo charcoal bags and they seem to work pretty well. They're called Moso Natural Air Purifying Bags. I bought the large sized bags from Amazon since a local store only had the smaller ones. The bags are non toxic and reusable. There are other similar charcoal odor absorbers you can buy. Bed Bath and Beyond and the Container Store have several kinds, if there are either store near you.

There are a number of articles here on TheCatSite about litter box maintenance. You may find a solution there.
