Im really worrying now guys. I stopped getting replies in my last thread about Kali's eye removal but I still have questions.
Its been 5 days since she had her last proper meal before her surgery (eye removal and desexing). Since shes been home she hasnt eaten. After 2.5 days I bought Hills A/D food and tried syringe feeding her but she has put up a major fight. She's really disoriented from losing her eye. I have bought tuna, salmon, mackerel, chicken breast and just nothing. Im completely broke after paying $1200 for the surgery but my vet saw her today and only charged me $15! Thank god for compassionate people. She said kali is healing really well. Her spay incision is perfect and her eyes swelling has completely gone down. She was a bit dehydrated so she gave her some fluid, a vitamin b12 shot plus a penicillin shot to help her recover. She didnt have a fever so she doubts she has any infection which is good. Shes also allowed to have her cone of shame off during the day when we can supervise her but she was struggling to adapt from the loss of her eye.
Im so worried. I dont know what to do. I boiled chicken and she wasnt interested. Shes gone from 4.1kgs before the surgery to 3.25kgs. Any suggestions would be amazing!

How long has it been since the fluids and B12? It's possible those will bring her appetite back, but it can take a few hours in my experience. Why penicillin if there's no infection?

What did the vet say about her not eating and weight loss?

Can you try again to syringe feed her if she doesn't start eating today? I know how hard it can be, I've had to syringe feed a very difficult cat who absolutely hated it and put up a major fight, but it can be done if you're patient and try to stay calm.  Just try a little bit at a time, then give her time to calm down afterward. It may be that she needs to get some food into her before she'll feel like eating on her own again.

Is it possible she's nauseated? She might be nauseated without actually vomiting, but it would really put her off eating. Signs of nausea include sniffing the food like she's interested, but then turning away, and/or licking her lips a lot. You could ask for anti-nausea medication if that's the case.

Oh poor Kail!

What did the vet say about her not eating? 5 days is really too long to go without anything. I think you'll have to try syringe feeding her again. I know they hate it, but it's for her own good. Could you try wrapping her up in a towel and getting some food into her? Even just a syringe full every hour would be better than nothing.

Shes had 2 syringes (5mls syringe) everyday but thats all. Its been 6 hours since she saw the vet I'm hoping for improvement in the morning. Its 11pm here (Aus) and shes sleeping at the moment. The vet said if she hasnt improved in 24 hours to bring her back. Please send good vibes for her to have her appetite back in the morning. I wake up at 6am so I'll try syringe feeding her again. Even my dog has gone off her food cos her sisters not eating. Its throwing them both out of wack.

She has vomited a couple of times but it was mainly water and a little bit of food. Im wondering if the pain medication was making her feel sick? Shes off those now and she seems to be moving around better. Maybe once they're completely put of her system her stomach will feel better.

One way or the other she needs food in her stomach or she is at risk of becoming VERY sick, including risk for a very dangerous liver illness.  Also, lack of appetite this far after surgery isn't normal, she needs a vet asap in my opinion.

You need to get her back in to the vets ASAP. Without . Eating she can developers hepatic lopsided if she doesn't already have it. She is also dehydrated by now. Please get her in today.

She needs to be syringe fed every couple of hours.  It's possible that heating up the food will help entice her to eat.  Ask the vet for an appetite stimulant.

She cant be syringe feeding if she is vomiting. She needs to see the vet so they can start het on I've fluids and give her meds for the vomiting. There is a reason she is vomiting and that needs to be addressed immediately.

Wow guys, its okay. And she threw up before we started feeding her, we think she was feeling nauseous because of the pain meds. And the vet saw her yesterday andd said she was okay I just need to focus on getting her to eat.

Baby food works well for my kitties as well as the original Fancy Feast varieties (pate).  You can try warming it up, too.  Until she eats on her own, though, continue syringe feed, but increase the frequency.  You can also add a couple of teaspoons of plain baby Pedialyte to help with the electrolytes.

if you decide to try the baby food, please make sure it's the stage 1 baby food, the pureed smooth kind. and the meat kind (chicken and gravy, turkey and gravy, ham and gravy, and beef in gravy). it's the kind that has only the meat, water, and some have a bit of cornstarch as the ingredients.

I do not have any direct experience with this kind of surgery, but just wanted to comment on two things.

I don't know if eye removal creates the same kind of feeling as ear problems - loss of equilibrium and therefore nausea, almost like motion sickness. You could mention an anti-emetic (anti-nausea) medication such as Cerenia to your vet and see if it would be worthwhile. If so, it might help her appetite.

I was also going to suggest pain medication, but that seems to have already run it's course. I would imagine this type of surgery would be painful, so I personally wouldn't disregard the fact that might still be in some pain. That alone can cause a decrease in appetite.

You can ask the vet for an appetite stimulant, as already mentioned.

I agree with others that not eating for five days is a really serious issue and should not be taken lightly. You do not want liver failure on top of everything else. I had to syringe feed my Sebastian for two weeks after coming home from the hospital for severe pancreatitis (he now has chronic pancreatitis). I don't think any cat likes it, but you do what you have to do. There are YouTube videos and here's one from a TCS member: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/227858/syringe-feeding-lucky-video-if-your-cat-is-not-eating

Sending lots of vibes...

Hey everyone, I've just gotten back from the vet where they're keeping her overnight to do some blood tests, put her on an IV and to try to get her weight up. Shes dropped down to 2.8kgs and she was 3.2kgs yesterday. Im really grateful for they're compassion. We are so broke at the moment so they started a tab for us to pay later. Im heartbroken I'm going to be away from her overnight. This is really hard for me. Shes my little baby. Every motherly instinct is just screaming for her but I know that she should be better by tomorrow. Send lots of good vibes to my baby. ♡

It sounds like she is in the best place for now. I know it's hard to be away from her over night but she really needs to get some food and liquid into her, an IV is the best option if she can't eat.

Lots of vibes for you and your girl. Keep us posted on her progress.

Called the vet, her kidneys were going into renal failure so theyre going to keep her for a few days to continue testing her and giving her fluids. They'll continue testing her to see if kindeys are improving or declining. I really hope she can pull through this. I cant lose my baby. She so important to me. Im so scared. Im going to visit her tomorrow. I pray she improves. I feel so guilty. Anyway, I have to get some sleep. After crying for hours after I spoke to the vet, I'm exhausted. Please pray for her. My poor little baby ♡

I am sorry if I didnt see your posts. My computer doesn't like this site and I can only respond by phone. Please private message me if you need gel and dont get a reply. Do you know if they had any problems with her during anesthesia? Did she have any kidney problems before?

They said her surgery went perfectly and no she had no problems with her kidneys before the surgery. She was a healthy little girl but because she didnt eat or drink for 5 days, her body couldn't handle it. I cant wait to visit her in a couple of hours. Ive been going nuts all night. I just want my baby home!!
