Both litter boxes are still free for her to use.

At this time one litter box is a basic tray and the other is a covered litter box.

They both have different litter in them at this time becasue I cleaned the downstairs one and she has not used it since i cleaned it. and I have cleaned her upstairs litter so much that I ran out of the litter and had to buy more. so i bought a different brand to help with the smell.

What i'm trying to find is why the upstairs box is used and the downstairs one isn't.  It doesn't help to say one is covered, one is not, what i''m asking is WHICH one is covered? Describe the differences between the two so i can see apicute of each in my mind and know which one is which.....

I do apologize for that. The upstairs litter is the basic tray and has an xpen around it to keep the dogs out.
The downstairs litter is the covered litter box. Which is in between two shelves so the dogs can't get to it.

I'm glad it seems better. Continue to do what's been suggested and hopefully she'll keep it up.

If you decide the Arm and Hammer is too dusty, Tractor Supply has a very good and very cheap clumping litter. It's my favorite b/c it's not dusty.

It's called Paws n Claws scoopable. It's $3.99 for 25# :D

Thanks, I will keep it in mind. I've not noticed if it is too dusty, I just really like that it smells clean in the room all the time and not like litter.

If your cat likes the A&H and there's no further issue then stick with it. However if you are like me, and absolutely hate dusty cat litter give the brand I mentioned a try.

I think your biggest issue was not cleaning the boxes enough. Continue with twice a day and hopefully you'll be on the other side of this issue.

Ah ok that's fine, and interesting that its the covered bx the cat won't go into. Some cats don't like covered boxes.  I understand the beed to keep the dogs out of it, but perhaps there is a way to protect an uncovered box downstairs, similarly to how you've done it upstairs.....

It is definitely something that I am going to look into. I just want to do everything I can to keep her from peeing at the door again.

I'm glad everyone's advice helped. I hope your cat continues just using the litter box(es). I guess not scooping once or twice daily would be like if you couldn't flush the toilet yourself and your owner didn't flush it every time after you used it...eventually, you'd want to go elsewhere...

Not wanting to scoop is one reason I didn't want a cat, but I scoop twice a day at least. Usually, as soon as I wake up to get it over with and either as soon as I get back home or shortly afterwards (to get it over with). I have to be on a schedule or else I'd let it accumulate probably.
Also, I scoop it 2x a day to give my kitty a semi-clean box. I'm guilty, however, of not yet washing her litter box.
What I did was run out and buy another cheap one from Target and filled that with fresh litter and they are side-by-side. It's been exactly one month today...
But I think it's been fine since they are both large-sized boxes and I scoop them at least 2x a day. I'd better clean them soon though!!!

The best way to do it (depending on where you live) is taking the on a back patio or drive way once they're dumped.

I use the hose and a big scrub brush. For hot water, I put a very large plastic cup of water in the microwave until it's almost boiled. I then dump that and some dawn dish soap in the boxes, rinsing with the hose.

I dry with old towels that are specifically for this task, then fill them with litter. From start to finish it only takes 15 minutes or so. I used to wash them in the tub in my spare bedroom, that was messy and time consuming.

Thank you!!! I didn't figure out yet how to do it. I may have to use a bathtub. I have to go look around my apt building to figure out if there's a hose around. At my old apt, the owner had a lock on the outside spout. I'll get a big scrub brush, a microfiber towel, and microwave hot water!! I can't just keep buying litter boxes. >.

I scrape the sides and bottom and use a lot of clumping litter, I have not found it necessary to empty and wash box.
I keep my litter about 4 inches deep to prolong the time in between washes. I also scoop every day at least once. However, my blue kitty Oksana is especially bad about digging a deep hole to pee, or peeing down the side.

I think she does this on purpose, b/c she starts complaining about the box about a week after I've scrubbed it. It will literally be almost like I just changed it and she starts complaining.

Then at about 2 weeks her cries become louder. The litter still looks great btw.

At 3 weeks she yells at me and refuses to sit with me until I change it. She learned very well from my positive reinforcement training and she uses it on me ;)

I hold out to 4 weeks until scrubbing b/c she's absolutely ridiculous. It's at this point she starts digging holes and peeing down the side just to spite me. It's like she knows my nose isn't as keane as hers, so she sets out to really make the box stink.

This all goes on while my other kitty Beans is unfazed. She could care less unless the box stinks, which it really doesn't at one month. She's nowhere near the diva Oksana is.

It is also worth mentioning that Oksana was a bottle baby and raised by human hands. I've heard this can ruin cats and some days, I would have to concurr. :p

Sounds like she has quite a personality. I honestly wish Jasmine had starting crying about her litter box instead of going to the downstairs back door to pee.
But with the constant scooping and cleaning we have not had any issues with it again and I'm hoping to keep it that way.
I love my girl like a baby, I am going to do what it takes to make her happy and keep things good.

You're probably good to go if you just keep at it. I wouldn't think any more than twice a day would be necessary.

Just wanted to say that...yes, I can keep buying litter boxes! O_O Well, I have a good reason this time. I bought a covered litter box for my "shy" girl and so I have not cleaned the other two large litter boxes yet.
I realized it was coming in the mail so I didn't have to clean the other two just yet. Terrible, I know. It's been 5 weeks.
Somehow I'm getting away with it...and I don't keep my litter 4 inches deep like @bigperm20but the litter boxes look okay actually...o_o

I caught my little girl in between both of the litter boxes this morning by accident and she then ran off and refused to go until later...so I hope she uses the covered litter box after I run to the store after work to buy lots of litter. I may keep that one 4 inches deep...it's huge. But I realized it's good for me to have the other two large, cheap litter pans in case I ever take a weekend trip...got them at Target. I
Boots & Barkley stuff at Target.

She might dislike the covered box because of the old kind of litter, or because the covered hood of the box restricts her sight and traps smells. Sensitive cats don't like getting into a stinky covered box, and skittish cats like to be able to see anybody approaching while they do their business.

I don't think she's saying the covered box is dirty, she's saying the old boxes are.

Some cats like covered boxes and some dont. I don't use them b/c I don't like cleaning the top when I have to clean the bottom. The less to clean the better.

As far as my 4 inch deep litter, you have to imagine it in it's context... an 8 inch deep Sterelite container;)

Please don't use the bath tub. The litter will clog the drain. Even flushable litter is not meant for bath tub or sink drains.

I realize the deep litter might work for others, but I have found my cats prefer less litter. I keep mine no deeper than 2 inches. It does require more frequent box washes but one of my cats hates deep litter and will pee against the box or on the floor rather than step in the deep litter.

I also find that using a clumping litter with frequent scooping (twice a day, once a day at least) means I need not wash the boxes that frequently. Honestly, it's probably once a quarter, though at different times because I only ever do one at a time.

If you lack a hose, you can use a bucket!
