I worked in an office that they kept so cold that even when I was 8 months pregnant in August I had to keep a heater on. I was always sick with a upper respiratory problem. And I had rashes on my legs and face. Once I resigned I haven't had these problems since. I worked there for 14 years and have never been healthier.

What choice do I have? I need my job and I'm not old enough to retire. We just wear our sweatshirts and crank our heaters up as high as they'll go. On Tuesday, we had rain pretty much all day. To us, it seemed like one of those fall days where it was chilly and rainy...that's what it felt like all day long. I couldn't wait to get home, grab a shower and put on a pair of sweat pants. Well, you can imagine my surprise when I walked out at the end of the day and it was really warm outside! Once I got home and thawed out a bit, I was fine. My hands and feet were like ice, though, until I got them warmed back up.

We finally got the maintenance guys to shut off our AC vents over our cubes. They didn't even want to do that, but they eventually gave in.

MicknSnicks2Mom I don't have Reynaud's, thank goodness. But I mind the cold terribly. And as I get older, I mind it more.

The thing is, I like my job. I really do. But some of the people? Not at all.

Draco, my very sincere apologies....I should have started my own thread. I certainly didn't mean to hijack yours.

I was always the one who was hot but, but I had fans going. My coworker would get mad but refused to buy a little heater to put under her desk.

Out of working my for over ten years, only once did I wear a light windbreaker. It was blowing like crazy and snowing. Lol. Tons and tons of coworkers asked if I was ill.

I am very anti social. I hate it. I wouldn't mind a friend or two at my place of work. I am no longer working... so now I just spend time with my kids and husband when they are not at work or school.
I do not like loud people as I have trouble hearing. One ear completely and the other ear is getting bad. I am 43.

I used to work in a "cube farm" in a physicians' practice and can identify completely.  The loudest, most obnoxious person in the office (we'll call her "Pat", since that's her name) complained that myself and a co-worker were "disturbing" her because we were typing too loud.  She would often comment that we sounded like "a bunch of horses".   Well, Pat ran her mouth about us when these people came in (I don't know what you call them, the ones who make recommendations on how a business can run more efficiently, like in the movie Office Space).  Pat wanted her own office, it seemed.  The efficiently people empathized...and my co-worker and I were given a bright, lovely office all to ourselves.

Thank goodness they got us out of there; we were really getting on poor Pat's nerves what with all that working and all.

Currently I'm waiting decision about retirement, but it does not look like they will approve.
I am really sorry that you went thru so much pain and aggravation.  Hope the migraines will subside and you can go on with your life feeling better.  I hope whoever they  are will eventually approve your retirement.  I had to retire at 62 rather than 65 because I had had lymphoma.  Hope you do better in the future.

When I worked on teams, I was usually the quieter "antisocial" one too, but the fact is I got my work done, often better and faster too! If I could find the time, the place, and the right people to socialize with, I would.. but those were few and far between.

Now I work largely on my own but sometimes the other department will ask for help and such, and while I may think it's unnecessary to go over there, they always want me to assume I'm needed. I feel useless and lost there (totally different from what I was hired to do or any other job I've ever done, and anything I've ever studied), I screwed up on my first day there, and the guy running that department who was there that day has had it out for me ever since. I know it's in part his job, and in part his personality and humor (you know that humor that's cut-throat and condescending, and always at your expense as a thinly veiled insult? that right there) but I don't feel valued around him. If it was anyone else working, I would have no problem helping, but if I'm going to be made to feel slow, stupid, and in the way when I do lend a hand, why would I ever want to go back? I'd sooner stick to my lonely corner.

Thankfully this is just a part time job, but I'm full time for the rest of the month and the tension is definitely there even when we try to get along. I'm excited to back to school so I have an excuse to not have to see him anymore.  Really just have to grit your teeth and get through another day until you find something better, but even then, there's always the chance you'll end up stuck working with or near other people you clash with, or other people who are just downright irritating. And that's life...

Wow, listening to everyone, I am SO glad I don't work with other people anymore!

I clean houses all by myself!  The only thing that sucks about that is I can only make so much, because I can only do so much myself.  I could always hire someone to help, but I can't afford to give up any of my income!

I guess my only pet peeve now, is if things aren't picked up so I can clean.  "I am not the maid, I am the cleaning lady. I don't live there, I don't know where it goes. Things should be put away, so that I can clean areas."

Most of my clients know this, & are good about it.

...........I wish all of you the best of luck!

Draco, I hope you find an even better job!!!!!

I would pick up everything and put it in one pile (neat pile) on a chair or  counter.  Better that than put it in the wrong place.

Hugs to you!  That is a job I could not do.

Thanks Kim!  Fortunately, my clients are pretty neat, so it's not usually an issue. If so, just little stuff, like today my client had a pan w/ something in it on the counter so after cleaning the stove top, I just set it on there. (I don't do dishes either, sink should be clear, so i can clean it).  If the dishwasher is full & just a glass or something is out, I will do it, but that's all.

I never thought I would be doing this either!  (My background is from doing hair, (only 5 yrs), then skincare, & massage, to 6 & 1/2 yrs as a buyer in the beauty Dpt. & buyer for Gen. merch. Dpt. at the local co-op,  to 2 yrs as an office manager for re-Bath.)  After being laid off from the latter, my parents knew a couple of people who needed someone to clean their house, & that's how it all started. It just all happened!  Through referrals, (one neighbor to another, one teacher to another, etc..)  & I booked up in just a year! I had even bought 2 boxes of cards, & only ended up going through 1/2 a box!

It's hard work, but my days are short, (jobs can take me anywhere from 2-4 & 1/2 hrs. but try not to go over that, it's just too much physically, because i work until I'm done). It's nice to be working for myself though!!

At home, I only still do a few waxing clients, & trade massage for my friend who does my hair! (& w/ another therapist when I can, because I sure need them, but luck if that happens every few months!)

"Thanks for the hugs, It's my 45th B-day today!"
