So I read a story online about a dying dog on the way to the vet to get put down because he wouldn't stand up or eat. The owners brought him through a drive-thru and bought him a Big Mac for his final meal. It turned out the dog was so excited for the Big Mac that he perked up and ate it in one bite and lived for 3 more years.

It is a very humorous story and I quite like the idea of giving your dying pet a final meal they deserve. Pets always seem to have a favorite "human food" which they are forbidden to have for the sake of their health. I had a cat back home recently pass away. I had her my whole childhood and she was very dear to me and I didn't get to say goodbye during her final days since I'm on the other side of the country. I would have liked to give her a warm cheesy turkey dinner on her last day.

Have any of you ever given your pet a "good" last meal? What was it? If no, What would you have wanted it to be?

I try to.  I just had a cat go to the bridge Monday and he had Fancy Feast fish and shrimp.  I NEVER feed fish flavors to my boy cats as I have had a bad issue with urinary issues and terrified to.  He had a can  on Saturday, a can Sunday for the night in cage(outside cat who was known to take off by sunrise so had no choice) and can morning of and gave left overs to his buddy cat.  Also got some fried chicken from local place.

Usually I focus more on catnip party if the cat seems it may enjoy it.  Many of my cats who have gone were to sick or young.  For the dogs I could see doing something similar.  Probably a bone in cooked chicken from local place that I NEVER would give cooked as they ALWAYS beg for it.  for the cats a really smelly fancy feast can as most are one way or other about many human foods.

I'm sorry for your loss, I hope his final moments were peaceful.

I always feel like Fancy Feast is a "junk food" for cats. I know some people have their cats on it regularly but that's their business. I remember my first cat, Mewma (whom was named by infant-me probably trying to call her "momma"), was fed Fancy Feast as a treat on her birthdays and such. She was a big fat cat her whole life until she was dying when I was 16 and she was losing tons and tons of weight really fast.  I would have loved to just give her fancy feast but she wouldn't eat. She died at the ripe old age of 20.

Losing a young cat is so hard. I used to try to feed the hundreds of strays by the railroad tracks where my dad lived when I was a kid. There was one kitten that I loved in particular that I named "Itchy" because he had lots of fleas. I couldn't save all of them and I'm sure many died or went on to produce more kittens but I was able to take Itchy home and he was the most laid back cat I ever knew. He never complained or anything, he'd come into the car on my way to school and he'd follow me around. The poor thing was very ill though. My family was very poor so there was nothing we could do. He had failing organs and horrible diseases (He might have been FIV+) he was perpetually drooling and smelled awful. He was probably only a year or 2 years old when he ran away to die.

That photo blog tore me to pieces. I must have been sobbing for 20 minutes even after I closed the window.

If I had a schedule of when they were going to be put down, I would spoil them beyond rotten. When I had an appointment for one of my lovebirds to be put to sleep after some long and difficult days dealing with liver disease/failure, the time I spent with her between booking the appointment and going to the appointment I just let her walk around the carpet. I put her favourite treat, millet, right in front of her and she would pick at it, toddle around, and pick at it some more. She was so skinny at that point too. If you have the chance to make the best of their remaining time, I see absolutely no harm in letting them enjoy it one last time.

I think it's a wonderful idea to let a terminal furbaby have a treat of whatever they want, anything that comforts is a beautiful gesture. I have often argued with doctors and family when tending a dying human patient, they say 'no more morphine', and I always think, 'are you kidding me, you'd withhold this from a dying person in great pain, why!!! are you honestly afraid of them being addicted!!! I myself would do anything in my power to give the dying what they desire or enjoy,  to be alone and afraid and in pain will not happen if I can help it. Sometimes the most comfort of all is to have someone there. Bless all of you who comfort the sick and the dying in any way you can, and remember the ones left behind, they need us more then ever.

I agree with you 100%.

We bought Buster chicken from Bojangles (a southern fast food restaurant) many times prior to his death.  It was his favorite and we wanted him to be happy.  He used to get it as an occasional treat when he was healthy, but when we realized we didn't have much time left with him, we went all out for him.

I'd feed Mia diced baby panda on a bed of mashed sea-otter with a liquidised siberian tiger dressing if it put a smile on her face one more time, gave her a moments peace, and allowed me to show her one more time how much I adore her. Well, perhaps not, but she'd get anything, anything she wanted. It would likely be coley fish steamed in a tiny bit of milk, or fish fingers, both of which she goes nuts for.

I would give them anything they wanted.  With sick kitties eating is often a huge issue so giving whatever they will eat can go on for awhile.

My cat Sally and her sister, Minnie always enjoyed Friskies seafood for their daily ration of soft food.  When sally was on her way out, she would get up from her long nap and ask for her Friskies. I gave her that right up to her last day, even though she just nibbled on it. My cats always enjoyed cooked chicken morsels as a treat. I should have given Sally some of that, but I didn't think of it at the time.

I would and have with my three RB cats.

Sphinx and Kuce loved human tuna and real Pork Rinds as well as fresh baked chicken and turkey. So both had some of each before they passed.

Dancing Bear loved Gerbers Stage 2 meat baby food as a treat. So he had a little of the chicken off my finger. He also liked raw steak (I know I will hear about that being not so good but it made him happy at the end).

I would give Ritz a huge bowl of raw rabbit, venison, beef, quail, as much as she wanted to eat. Maybe some people food, like deli meat. And I'd let her lick the bowl of my cooked oat bran cereal. (She likes carbs since she gets almost none; I fed prey model raw.
My twin sister scheduled a week off before she euthanized her beloved dog, Lovey Dovey (kidney failure). She spent loads of time with her, took Lovey Dovey for walks around her favorite places, and fed her peanut butter, chocolate, a tv dinner and anything else. I'm not sure I could be that brave. (A vet came to her home and euthanized Lovey Dog.)
