Hi,

For some time now my cat has been having 30 second-1 minute hacking fits usually once a day (that I'm aware of)

He's perfectly healthy and acts normal aside from the hacking.

Do you think it's just has a hairball he's having trouble getting up?

First off, has he been to the vet at all?  The vet is really the one you need to see about this.  It is irresponsible not to.  It could be a lot of things, some quite serious, that could be happening.  He could have congestive heart failure or pulmonary problems (this is one of the signs), it could be an URI, it could be allergies.   I don't know how old your kitty is but this is not normal and you need to consult a vet as soon as you can.

How long has he had this coughing?

I have a cat with similar symptoms, and he has been diagnosed with allergic bronchitis/asthma. He had coughing 1x/day for a few days and then it would become more frequent. I'd recommend a trip to the vet to check it out. I even recorded one of the coughing fits on my phone for the vet to review and she found it very helpful. Currently, my cat just takes a small amount of prednisolone when it flares and that seems to do the trick. Despite this, he is a very normal, active and playful guy.

Good luck!!

At least a month it's been going on. That's a good idea to take a video of it to show the vet, thanks!

My cat, Piper, who is 9yrs old now was diagnosed with asthma a few months ago.  But when I took her into the vet, he was telling me that pulmonary problems were being tested for and looked for because it is one of the signs.  It's probably just asthma.  However, like with people, it's not fun to deal with when an attack happens and he needs medicine for it.  Good luck!

Yeah asthma was my next guess, but of course I'll have the vet be the judge.

Just curious, how do you administer the medicine for your cat's asthma?

Xavi just gets a pill once or twice a day. Luckily he is easy to pill. But the vet told me that if it worsens we would consider a kitty-inhaler. I've never seen one but I can only imagine trying to get him to sit still for that!!
