my kitten zero is 7 months old, about 2 weeks about tried to change his food from kitten whiskers to whiskers adult food which is mixed with whiskers dry food .he ate it for a week and then got diarrhoea for a week.

I took him to the vet who advised he has temperature and colitis and gave us 3 days of id food and Imodium syrup and said that would sort It and it seemed to do the job for 3 days.

today put him back to whiskers adult food he will not eat much of it at all and has runny stool again his insurance will not cover this due to Similer problems when he was in the rescue home,, where do I go from here?

he seems normal in temperament and was fine with the kitten wet and dry food. I know the adult food is the problem but unsure of how to sort his tummy and introduce adult food

I think the vet will say the same thing again and advise of id or science plan unsure if this is the best thing to do or should I go with giving him the left over Imodium syrup with something else?

help please

If he is fine on the kitten Whiskers, I would put him back on that until you figure out a plan. I don't know how quickly you transitioned him to the adult food, but any changes to dry food should be done slowly to avoid stomach upset. So, if you did the transition quickly, that may be part of the problem.

Secondly, I don't know the ingredients of the kitten versus the adult versions of the food, but the adult version may have ingredients that he has an intolerance to. Generally, grains, starchy vegetables and fish are common allergens for cats.

Cats are obligate carnivores, so feeding a diet that is high in animal protein, low in carbs is best. Unfortunately, many common brands are way too high on carbs. Here's a good article on choosing good food.

Finally, it may really help his digestive system right now to provide probiotics. Here's an article on that.

thanks I changed him straight from whiskers kitten wet to adult wet the vet advised this was probably the problem

the issue is now that I have done his treatment and put back on adult wet whiskers and whiskers kitten dry food mixed together and the loose stool is back

it stopped for 3 days while on the imodum and hills id

is it worth giving him chicken and rice until his stomach is settled and stool is back to normal then going back to the kitten food and slowly introducing the adult food

as hes not eating anything at the moment

If he will eat plain poached chicken then you can give him that for up to 5 days.  It can't be long term because it isn't complete but a few days is fine.  That should settle his digestive system back down.  I would try just plain chicken with some of the broth it's cooked in first.  If the diarrhea doesn't begin to taper off then add a little rice to it.  It's important that he eats to avoid liver issues.

sorry to sound daft but how do I go  about cooking the chicken for kitten im guessing not with an oxo cube like I would for myself also if I add rice that would be plain boiled right?  and can I keep it in the fridge overnight for the next day  im so worried I just want to him to eat something

Just boil it in plain water then when it's cooled to room temp just shred a little and mix it with some of the liquid that it was cooked in.  You don't want to add seasoning, even salt to it.  If the chicken by itself doesn't seem to be working then you can mix a little plain rice in with the chicken and cooking liquid.  Just put everything in covered containers in the refrigerator.  You will need to warm the refrigerated food up a bit, kitties don't usually care for cold food.  If you use a microwave stir everything together after heating for a few seconds so there aren't hot spots in the food.
