Hi,

My year and a half old male cat, Shambles, just got back from the emerg. vet. I noticed yesterday afternoon he went to the bathroom quite a few times but I thought nothing of it as he was acting his normal, crazy self. Then I went to a movie and got back around 10:30 and I noticed he went to the bathroom twice withing the first ten minutes of me getting home so I thought I'd investigate. I looked in the litter box and there was some blood. I immediately freaked out and called my boyfriend to come back over. He started looking up on the internet what it may be and he kept coming across that if it's a male cat then you must take to a vet immediately.

The vet kept him over night and said that after an ultrasound there are no blockages but would like to keep him b/c his bladder is empty and they need a urine sample. I picked Shambles up this morning and they think he has FLUTD and that changing food for sure is a necessity. But they have now sent his urine to the lab because it was full of blood and bacteria, which is rare to have because they took the urine directly from his bladder. They have left me with two weeks of antibiotics for him to help kill the bacteria, a week worth of a liquid pain killer and a liquid that helps relax his urethra so it is not being strained all the time.

Other than the bloody urine and him going to the litter box a lot more, he seems to be showing no other signs of an illness. He's still active and eating.

Any idea as to the blood and bacteria in the bladder?

I was hoping someone would say it is just a bladder infection and not anything more :)

Thank you so much for replying so quickly!!

Hi ShamblesAndCleo - welcome to the forum !

Exactly what is the name of this pain killer ? Exactly what is the strength of the drug (should be on the bottle/label) and how much + how often are you giving it? And, do you know Shamble's weight ?

Now, you're in Edmonton (Canada).........I'm hoping it's not "Metacam" - three years ago, the "Einsteins" at Health Canada approved its use in cats just weeks after the US FDA's cautioning American Vets, advising against its use for felines ! (http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm231254.htm)

Shambles.........there's a story behind that, I'm sure

Hi!

Here is what the vet discharge forms say:
Antibiotic is Clavamox 62.5 mg, 1 tablet every 12 hrs

Pain killer is Vetergesic 4.4mL per injection every 8 hrs
Urethral dilator is Prazosin 2.5mL per injection every 8 hrs

Shambles weighs about 10-12 lbs.

The food they would like him to have from now on is Medi Cal - Urinary SO canned food. The vet says he should be eating 2 cans a day (each can is 5.82 oz). So far I can only get him to eat 1 can a day which to me seems like a normal amount? 2 seems like a lot. I am having trouble getting him to drink a lot though. Any suggestions??

Shambles was adopted and the people who adopted him left him on the door step of the shelter the next morning. I adopted him a week later but had to wait an extra week because he was still under weight. He had crazy hair that stuck up all over the place. So his life kinda started in shambles and when he has energy he is a crazy cat!

The pain killer is an injectable form buprenorphine available in Canada. I wish it were prescribed here we get it in a liquid that is put in the pocket of the cheek. T

I wonder if we could get it through Canada Drugs if our vet would prescribe it, or if it can't cross the U.S. border.
