The saga continues.... Just had a call from the new vet. Blood test confirms that Egypt is indeed having hormonal issues. That means that the first 2 vets who did 3 surgeries managed to miss part of an ovary. This poor cat! She is exceptionally calm right now, so we agreed to hold off on a 4th surgery until she begins another heat cycle. If they do the surgery while she is actually in heat it may increase the visibility of the ovarian remnant. And in the meantime, I'm praying for God to just eradicate the errant tissue before she goes into heat again! :-) I really hate to put her through another surgery.

I'm thankful that this vet took me seriously, did blood work, and confirmed that I'm not crazy. And encouraged that she has a partner who has done many of these surgeries successfully.

We did discuss hormone therapy, but she is not in favor of it. She said the treatments that are available have some serious side-effects. Does anyone have feedback about that?

Wow! Talk about an epic saga of frustrating proportions! I was super lucky. I did not spay my cat until she was four years old and my vet was competent and got it all out in one go. It sounds like this vet actually knows what she is doing!

Oh goodness gracious!  I'm glad to hear you've found a vet who listens and works with you.  That's a valuable thing to have for sure!

I've had no experience with hormone replacement type things; so I can't help there.  I've been quietly following your story though.

Prayers for Egypt please. The new vet is doing surgery this afternoon, and I'm praying that she is able to find the ovarian tissue. Egypt went into heat again on July 6 - this is a cycle of every 2.5 to 3 weeks. So unacceptable, for my sanity and for her comfort.  I asked again about hormone therapy. She said there are two options. One causes diabetes, the other causes infection in what's left of her uterus. She would not recommend either.

I am getting mixed comments among my friends. Some are horrified that I am putting her through another surgery. Others think I should have had her put down already. Most understand that I really want her to have a normal life because she is such a darling cat.

She deserves the best medical care you can afford to give her.
She already has a human she deserves: you.
Vibes and prayers for you and Egypt.

Poor Egypt having to go through a 4th surgery.  And poor you for having to deal with all the stress and decisions.  Here's hoping they get it all this time.  Will she be home tonight?  Or will they keep her for observation.  Please post when you have a post-surgery update.

I that Egypt in your avatar?   If so, she is a beautiful cat.

Just heard from the vet - they found a large piece of an ovary on her left side and removed it. She feels sure this has been the source of the problems. They are keeping her 2 nights because they had to make an overly large incision in order to explore. Thanks for the prayers everyone! Now all I can do is wait and see whether she goes into heat any more.

Good news! I'm happy for you both. Now I would demand money back from the other vet that screwed up the last time cutting her open

I had a cat that behaved this way years ago. It was because she was a hermaphrodite, or two sets of sex organs. In our case, she had all female and imbedded testes that required a second surgery to locate and remove. It's worth a shot.

After reading all these posts I know now that I am not going crazy.  I adopted my 3 year old cat Miley 2 years ago and these past few months have left me and my daughter many sleepless nights because of her loud meowing, pacing back and forth, etc.  I took her to the vet about a month ago and got her shots up to date and the vet said she is going through  heat cycles even though she is spayed.  This is not the vet that spayed her and this vet said they could do exploratory surgery which I cannot afford to do.  I am wondering if I contact the vet that did the surgery if they could do another surgery with no charge.  This is driving me crazy only getting 2 hrs. sleep a night.  What do you all think about Rescue Remedy at the Pet Supply, do you think this might help calm her down?

Hi Sandra, I certainly feel your pain! I did try Rescue Remedy and it didn't help with this particular problem. It's certainly worth a try to go back to the first vet and ask. Some cities have low-cost spay clinics too. Perhaps you have that in your area? As far as getting sleep, my cat calmed down when I put her in her carrier at night. Sounds strange but it worked for us. Good luck and do let us know what happens.

Just to give an update - Egypt came home last Friday and has been so calm and contented! My friends all asked whether she had a personality transplant. Of course, we'll have to watch and see whether she goes back into heat over the next several months, but she has a calmness that she didn't have before. Especially notable is that she was very comfortable with a group of people in the house on Monday evening. Before this, she really freaked out and scrambled for a hiding place when people came in the front door. So I am VERY encouraged and hopeful that this vet has solved the problem! (Thank you to Dr. Perkins at Cat Hospital of Metairie - Metairie Louisiana)

Good to hear.  Let's hope your calm kitty is here to stay.
