My little chocolate brown ex-barn kitten Grace will be (per our vet's best guess) 6 months old at the end of this month, so it's that time.  She's getting spayed and microchipped on May 22.  I have no qualms at all about the fact that pets absolutely must be neutered.  I've never had a pet that wasn't, heck, even my bunny is spayed!  But all my past kitties and the other three I have now have been shelter kitties, relieving me of having to fret over the prospect of surgery.  So now I'm going out of my mind with worry that something will go wrong.  I know it's a necessity, I know it's the best thing for her, I like and trust my vet (he's been my vet for over 20 years)...it's just that totally irrational worry.

I just needed to share that with other kitty folks who understand.  She and I would appreciate good thoughts/vibes being sent her way!

Here's a couple pics...the first pic we took of her when we got her in January, and a pic of her now.

Yeah, I think a lot of us know about that "irrational worry".  Not useful at all.  It would be like worrying about being hit by lightning, the odds are against it.

So sending you and Grace good, non-worrying, positive vibes.....

Also, if you want, just ask your vet if they do pre-surgery bloodwork....some vets do, and some do not.

It may cost more, but it does make things less of a worry,  though its unusual for a young pet to have this done over here.

:-)  Thanks much, Cat Nap!

I did let the vet know that I want the pre-surgery bloodwork, and I'll remind the staff when I take Grace in.  He's very big on that anyway, he prefers that critters have it done every year even if they aren't due for surgery, just in case of emergency.  When it's "just because" I don't do it quite as often as he'd like, but definitely before surgery plus maybe every other year.

Thanks again!

Wow, @beckbjj....I saw these photos just now, and have to say that Grace is a doll....so cute.

Its hard to imagine that the little fluff ball became even more adorable. And I never have really seen a brown cat, which is strange, to me, I don't know why.  Have seen all the other colours, but not so much in brown.

Sounds like your vet is very good, so you don't need more vibes...but I'll send them anyhow....since I am a worrier too (which is so not good for us to be..)

Oh, what cute pictures!  I'm with you, I've always got cats who were already spayed.  I hope all goes well.  Sending good vibes for you and your baby!

Thanks so much everybody!

As for her being brown, it's fairly rare in non-purebred cats I guess.  There are a couple of brown breeds, but she's definitely a mutt, LOL!  There's an old expert thread on here from maybe a month or two back, a geneticist was posting here and she explained the genetics behind how a "mutt" cat could turn out brown...I guess both parents have to carry the recessive brown gene (but not necessarily be brown themselves) and the kitten would have to have inherited that gene from each of them.  I just couldn't resist her adorableness when a coworker of my husband rescued her and offered her to us!

I had my two baby girls spayed last year and I was the same as you. I was beside myself with worry. They were both perfectly fine. They didn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. They healed beautifully and now it's all in the past. I am wishing the same for your pretty girl Grace. :vibes:::vibes::vibes:
Im not going to say don't worry. You will anyway!! But it will be ok. :hugs:

Thanks everyone, it worked! ;-)   I picked Grace back up from the vet's about 2:30 this afternoon.  She's getting over the anesthesia already, her eyes look about normal and she's starting to get a bit feisty!

Here's Grace's chubby tummy with her little incision.  Poor baldy tummy!  LOL!

She's already eating a little (she would eat a lot if I'd let her, but I'm taking that slow), using the litter box, playing with her big brother, and generally trying to get in trouble (and I'm trying to stop her).

So, I take it that "Trouble" is Grace's middle name, then?

That incision is very small, and looks really good.  You won't be able to see much of a scar at all. (For some reason I thought it would be longer.)

I only ever had a female cat back in the 80's, which is kind of strange...why mostly male cats.

From back then, I know the operation was not a problem for Rainbow Jasper, since she too, like your Grace, loved to eat.

If you have the time post some of your cat stories about Grace on this thread called "the Cat Diaries",  you don't have to read through it,  because it is long,  just post at the end....http://www.thecatsite.com/t/276247/the-cat-diaries/60#post_3555672

I have a bunny, who happens to be neutered.

Does your bunny interact with your cats? Mine poke at each other through the cage. Roland used to be allowed out before Glinda came. He got one night of freedom when she was at the vet. Tomorrow he gets to go outside.

I had Glinda microchipped during her spay as well.

Glinda is also a former barn cat. We had socialization issues. Glinda is a scaredy cat at heart. The fireworks tonight spooked her pretty bad. She seemed really upset that no one would hide under the table with her.

Grace absolutely loves Snickers (our bunny), the other cats kind of ignore her.  A lot of times Grace will lay on top of Snickers' cage and they "talk" to each other.  When Snickers is out of her cage, Grace likes to hang out with her.

We've been pretty lucky with socializing Grace with the other kitties.  She's a little spitfire destined to be alpha, so she hisses a little at our four year old twin girl kitties, but nothing beyond that.  She adores her sweet natured big brother Quincy who has been her babysitter since we got her.  One of the twin girls has had an issue with Quincy after he had to spend a few days in the hospital for a urinary blockage almost a year ago, so we're kind of keeping the two sets of two mostly separated for now.  But once Grace is completely healed from surgery, we're going to work harder on that situation.

Grace is pretty good with outside people too, compared to our other three who hide.  She hides a bit but will eventually venture out.  With us she's very independent, stubborn, and opinionated, and lets us know if she doesn't want to be picked up, petted, etc., but nevertheless she is very sweet most of the time.  She's really funny!
