Hi,

My 3 month old kitten keeps wagging its tail from side to side very swiftly, she is very restless , keeps meowing all the time even when she's sleeping she keeps kicking her hind legs,it feels like she is in a lot of pain/discomfort. she's not lethargic though and is eating/pooping fine. I took her to the vet 3 days back, who prescribed amoxil (amoxicillin)  since she was running a fever and albendazole. she'd already received a course of mebendazole for worms at 6 weeks. the albendazole did not help her so i took her to a different vet yesterday (since the one I took her to wasn't available) he also said its a case of worms. gave her a shot and told me to keep up the amoxil course.its been 24 hrs since and there's no improvement. she is also suffering from ringworms. I am using miconazole nitrate creme and ketoconazole shampoo once a week for it. has anyone experienced this before? can worm infestation be so difficult to get rid of.? or is it something different altogether that the vet is unable to diagnose?

i am particularly worried because another one of my kittens had the same symptoms and he passed away last week. I took him to a well-known vet and he kept saying he's in discomfort because of the itch caused by the ringworm.! obviously i went to a different vet this time. but the thing is here in my country veterinary practise is not very developed so its really hard to find a good vet. and even the few very good ones don't value life. I've already lost one kitten. I don't want to lose another one.!!

Hi there, i'm sorry you're going through all this.

Regarding ringworm, there are a lot of threads on this topic and I'll link you to them and to some articles.  Ringworm is a fungal infection like athlete's food, it is not a worm, and for people with normal immune systems, it isn't dangerous at all although people and other cats can catch it.  If the vet euthanized your cat because of ringworm, that would be against standard veterinary practice in the USA because there is no reason to do this.  The vet who said your cat was in discomfort because of the itch would be the same as saying a cat with a mild skin allergy should be euthanized due to discomfort, which is ridiculous.  It sounds like the vet was looking for an excuse to euthanize and may not have wanted to deal with more cats catching it since it is contagious.

Ringworm is hard to get rid of, it can take a few weeks even with treatment, but again it isn't dangerous, just annoying.  You can also get shampoos from your vet, and oral medications if needed, but insist that your kitten gets treated and not euthanized.   If needed, print out and show him the articles below so he understand that you know euthanasia is 100% unnecessary.  If I had a choice I'd find a vet who valued your kittens lives more.  In some areas, vet are more concerned about farm animals than about companion animals.

The tail swishing suggests she is mildly annoyed or possibly restless, I would encourage her to play with toys (not your hands).  And while she has ringworm, wash your hands after handing her, and you may want to look into finding a soap that is anti-fungal in nature.

How are they determining that the kitten has worms?  Are they testing the cat's stool?  Blood?  Or are we confusing "worms" with ringworm as StephenQ mentioned?

You don't have to name your exact location, but perhaps naming which country you are in will help.  We have members from many other countries so someone might be able to better help you with local resources.

What is kitty eating?

Thank you for the replies.

she has ringworm AND intestinal worms. Both the vets just did a physical examination of the kitten.

I am giving the kitten wet canned food to eat and chicken stock to drink once a day and off course fresh water. She hasn't lost her appetite at all. She just screams all the time. Her behaviour is sort of like when a cat in heat, raises her butt up, swishes her tail continuously, is very restless, but I know she's not in heat because my other kitten who died last week was behaving in the same way and he was a male . I searched online and found out that cats raise their butt up to relieve pain in the abdomen. Can intestinal worms cause abdominal pain? or death?

I am sorry I was not able to communicate very well in my earlier message. My other kitten was not euthanized. He started behaving in the same way so I took him to the vet. The vet told me he was just in discomfort due to the itch caused by the ringworm and he well be his old self again once the ringworm is cured. 5 days later he suddenly collapsed and died before I could take him to the vet again.

I am from Pakistan btw.

Yeah, I can see where intestinal worms can eventually kill due to the intestinal damage they can cause (such as perforation), but I can't say for sure that is something you should worry about.  If worms are a concern, maybe a different dewormer should be used.  It also helps to know which worms we're fighting, so the most effective dewormer can be used.  Then again, I don't know what is available to you in Pakistan.

Sorry, I see albendazole.

This is for ghiardia, tri-trich and roundworms.

No drontal plus or panacur? (fenbendazole)

No fecal test, just the physical exam?

@June A

I apologize for misinterpreting your post!  A kitten dropping dead like this is unusual.  Worms would not do this, but a more aggressive parasite like Giardia or Coccidia could do this in time if untreated,  But the cat would be sick prior, with lots of diarrhea.....
