My boyfriend and I just moved our 1 year old male cat to a new apartment so he's already stressed, been meowing to go out and just meowing in general a lot, so I feel even worse about this. He was up a lot of the time tonight and was attacking something in between the heater and the window where he likes to look outside and I was scared he was going to chew on a wire or something, so I walked over to go put a towel over it so he couldn't get to it. It was really dark and he's black so I didn't see him in front of me and I kicked him upside the head. It felt like a pretty hard kick to me and I feel horrible. He was already stressed about moving (3 in  times a year, from places with a lot of other cats, and now here with none. I feel awful but we had no choice, my mother can't work and we got evicted while I was still living at home) and now I've made him feel worse. I tried sitting down and apologizing to him, I tried petting him and he definitely wasn't interested. I think he's fine injury wise because I did manage to get him to chase a toy around for about 15 minutes, but when I try petting him or calling him he walks the other way. I also tried giving him some treats and he wasn't interested. Is he going to act like this towards me forever? I just want to make him feel better again. :(

My cats are very forgiving when I accidently step on them...they yell a bit but they don't hold grudges.  They run off immediately, but are usually approachable within a few minutes. Hopefully, yours is smarting just a bit but will get over the slight.  Just be extra generous with your time and a couple of treats.

Hi

In all honesty, you just have to be patient and give him a bit of space, I think.  You've done all the right things and he isn't having it for now, so give him a little time to come back to you on his own.  If he will chase a toy you are controlling he doesn't hate you that bad

If in a while he is still avoiding you, try what you've already tried- treats, apologizing, playing.  I'd wait to try petting until he comes to you.

Good luck.  I know it feels like an eternity now but I know he'll come around soon.

I wouldn't worry. I have a black baby who will walk between my legs every time I get up. I have gotten her many times at night but SHE still continues to weave in and out of my legs every time I walk. I tell her, Halle Berry you're trying to kill me by tripping me. Ha-Ha

I think it's the move that has your baby upset. The bump was just an add on to the stress he already is feeling. He'll be fine with both the move and thump with lots of love and cuddles.

Thanks guys you made me feel a lot better, and this morning he woke me up by lying on my head wanting me to pet him, so everything's all good now! :)

I'm glad your furbaby is forgiving you!  I've had too many of those scares to count, so I know you awful you must have felt.  I might have some advice to prevent accidents in the future.  Always look before you turn around, never step backward without checking, and try sliding your feet or putting your toes down first.  You might still kick someone that way, but there's a lot less force behind it and you're more likely to get the cat's paws or tail, instead of head.
