I adopted her today and she's 4 1/2 months old! I am so stuck on names! Her big sis is Zoey! The only names I've thought of so far are Maya and Piper, but I'm not sure they fit!
My vote is for Piper, i was going to say Sassy, but Piper is my favorite, and if you like planes you can always call her Piper Malibu....lol
She is gorgeous! Its great that Zoey and her will keep each other company.
Tell us how the first meeting went? Or will go if you will be doing it gradually, after she gets more settled and comfortable? I cannot remember how long you should keep them apart, since she just arrived, or if they just kind of feel each other out. Can't remember what my vet said.
Thanks for the help guys, so far Piper and Maya are my two favorites still, but I'm not quite ready for a concrete name choice yet! I really like Mia, but that's the name of my sister's dog!
As for the first meeting....I bought in the carrier hoping Zoey could look at her from inside, but she never went near it. So I held her and Zoey came and sniffed and then ran away, she seemed scared, but not angry.
The new one is living in my guest room for now, i'm going to hear from the vet Monday, and see how quickly I can get her spayed, if it's soon I'll probably wait until after the surgery to introduce them for real! But for some reason I'm not sure my vet will spay until 6 months!
Look at those big wide eyes... she's still unsure, isn't she? Poor girl, it's tough having to move house. But she'll figure out soon enough that she has landed on her feet!
P.S. My girl Coco is three months old and I will definitely wait until she is 6 months to get her spayed. It's a more serious surgery than for boys (my boy Banjo was castrated last week and he's 4 1/2 months) so I want her to be ready and healthy for it.
I just realized never updated you guys on the little one! She went through a couple of names. First I went with Maci, but she just seemed too much of a wild child for that name, so she became Izzy! She's doing well and her and Zoey had started to adjust, although it was mostly chasing each other. However I still had not let them be around each other when I was asleep or at work.
She went to the vet yesterday for a spay, the vet asked me to board her for a few days for monitoring because she's so tiny! I'll pick her up after work tomorrow. I saw her yesterday evening after she got out of surgery and she seemed okay, still wanting to love on her mommy
This is my question (which I will also ask my vet tomorrow) should I keep her from Zoey until her incision heals, because they wrestle, or should they be good to go?
I would keep her separated from her housemate for a day, just to see how they both do. Usually, if they are buddies, and are familiar with each other. my experience is they will respect each others space. If they are not buddies at all, or if you have misgivings, then keep them apart until she is healed.
Some girls play too hard and hurt themselves, or jump up on things, or lick their stitches. It depends on the cat. This particular one... yeah, she sounds like an active enough cat that she might get herself into a tussle before she's recovered enough. Supervise her until you know how she reacts, and crate her if you need her to stay quiet. I just held my cat on my lap when he got back from the vet, but Tiny's a male and he was pretty much ready to go after the anesthesia had worn off; plus sensible enough to rest until the soreness went away.
She is lovely. I would keep them separate until a day after they take the stitches out of her. The desexing operation for females is a major operation, while for male cats it is a relatively simple procedure that shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 days to recover from. Also, depending on where you get it done, consider that Izzy may come back smelling of all the unfamiliar smells she's likely to pick up during her procedure, and Zoey might not respond positively to it.
I just went through desexing with my boy Banjo, and will wait until my girl Coco is about 6 months, to get hers done. They are now best buddies, but I do plan to have Coco separate from Banjo for as much as she needs to be. After a few days I'll probably let Coco be with Banjo under supervision and only for naps, and will take reintroducing them after the operation carefully, as if they were meeting for the first time, making sure Banjo slowly smell the unfamiliar odors when Coco comes back.
Good luck, I hope Izzy recovers well from her surgery.
Thanks for your replies. Picked up Iz about 30 minutes ago! She's going great! She has desolvable stitches, so she won't have to get those out. Zoey definitely "remembered" her little sis and was totally fine with her when I brought her in. I did just put Izzy in the extra room because she was running around wanting to play and the vet suggested that I limit her activity for a while, and well if she's around Zoey right now they'll both be hyped up!
Well, my little black one's OFFICIAL name for the vet is Shadow. But at home he gets called anything from Stealth Monkey, Monkey, Midnight, and Blackspot--perversely because he has five or six white hairs on his chest. Fortunately he answers to just about anything.
He looks like a little sleek black panther, and you cannot see him in the dark.
