Hi, I have a question about Omega 3 fish oil. So I notice that my cat Mitu is been getting a bit of dandruff lately. I've done some research and they say it can be the dry weather ( we do have some dryness so Ill buy a dehumidifier soon) but I also read that omega 3 fish oil will help with this problem and its also good for his coat and other things. I did some more research and found this one from Nordic Naturals
http://www.nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/514/?ProdID=1592

Now my question is, should I do this? Should I give him a little bit of omega 3 fish oil? Would this help him or harm him? Also can I give it to him if he is on lysine?
Thank you.

Yes Fish Oil is a good idea for all pets.  I give it to all 5 of my cats and my dog.  I do know that if you give Fish Oil it can deplete Vitamin E so you need to supplement with both.  From my research cats need 1000mg of Fish Oil and 100 IU of Vitamin E per day.  I just use the human fish oil capsules.  I have 2 cats who are on Lysine who get Fish Oil with no problems.  Fish Oil can help with a lot of different things.  Here's a thread here that talks about it: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/253393/omega-3-supplements-for-cats  A lot of people use Krill Oil for their cats here, I didn't see much of a difference with it so just stuck to the Fish Oil.

Here's another couple great articles about them:

Yes, fish oil can be very beneficial for overall health to not only improve skin conditions having to do with allergies, dandruff and coat condition, but its also beneficial in helping to support the immune system. I have been looking at that very brand that you have referenced and have read that it is one of the better ones for purety and being free from issues with contamination.

As with anything that you introduce that is to be consumed, its always best to start with small amounts to see if your kitty tolerates this well. Some oils have been known to cause stomach upset and nausea in some cats, so starting with a 1/2 teaspoon or so in wet food might be a good place to start, and then build up from there when you see that Mitu is doing well.

Excellent point from oneandahalfcats about starting with small amounts and increasing over time.

That principle pretty well applies to all changes we want/need to make for our cats. They absolutely detest noticeable changes in many things, so the trick is to introduce the change so gradually that it's not/barely evident.

With Krill Oil, some cats react very negatively to it.....because of that, I would start with much, much less than half a teaspoonful...I think that I would start off with a single small drop mixed into wet foods for a few days, then two drops for another few days etc. Sure, it will take some time to get up to the desired daily dose, but I'd rather do it that way than risk total rejection - and, if she rejects it once, you can be sure she'll remember and be on the lookout for any future encounters with Krill !

It will indeed help with the dandruff.  Though, it may take some time before you see real results, 3 - 4 weeks would be my guess.

Its ok if it does, it actually took about that much with his watery eye when I started giving him Lysine but I will be happy if it helps. I already ordered it so as soon as it gets here ill start giving it to him. Thank you again everyone.
