Hi everyone! Long story, but would like to know if anyone's cat dealt with a kidney infection or kidney disease and what they think about what happened to my cat.

My 6, almost 7 month old kitten Sebastian landed in the hospital Friday night with a 105.5 fever and he had been acting like he felt terrible! When I got home from work he was just sitting in a tight loaf with his fur puffed out and a glazed look in his eyes and he felt all hot. I picked him up and he vomitted clear liquid. I looked and didn't find more vomit and checked his litter box. He had pooped that day.

So I took him to the e-vet and found out he had a high fever, but his physical exam was fine. So they kept him overnight on IV fluids and did many tests.

Blood work was normal except slightly elevated white count but not so much as to necessarily mean infection.

Xray's showed enlarged kidneys!

Ultrasound showed cause of enlarged kidneys are inflamed glomeruli, such as is associated with infection.

Urinalysis was normal.

Urine was so dilute that we are still waiting for culture results. Doc says it could take days.

Well, overnight his temperature went back to normal and he was feeling much better after the fluids, so I took him home with appetite stimulant (haven't needed it yet, he's been eating like a champ) and clavamox which he will take till culture results come in to see if his meds need to change.

So, this has worried me of course because of things like kidney disease. I really haven't found any info at all about kidney infections without having it lead to kidney disease. But none of his tests indicate kidney disease so far or even an infection really. All we're going on is his fever and inflamed kidneys.

So could this really be an infection with normal blood and urine? Can I expect him to fight a kidney infection and then be healthy, or could this be a chronic kidney problem just starting or something else? I guess only time will tell. He's 100% himself today, except for the diarrhea his meds are giving him. :(

The good news is that if it is just a kidney infection it isn't affecting their function except maybe causing the dilute urine.  Hopefully once the infection goes away the kidneys will go back to their normal size.  You can try giving your cat Probiotics to help with the diarrhea, just give them about 2 hours before or after the Clavamox.

How long have you had him?  Sometimes stress can cause urinary infections.  Has your home been stressful lately with different activity, people coming and going, a new routine?
