The semi-feral I've taken in, after injury and amputation, has always been simply called "Kitty" by me.
As we work together each day, with feeding time, play time, cuddle time, I realize I'd like to start to try some training, starting with "come". After doing some reading I see I have to be careful not to refer to her with nicknames (already I call her Pooka, Sweetie, Cutie, Sweetheart), so I'm working hard to remember she is "Kitty" first and foremost.
Has anyone had success getting semi-ferals to come when called by name? When she was outdoors 4 years, I would always call "KITTTYYYY" and she would often appear in minutes, but I wonder now if she thinks "Kitty" means "DINNNER!"
Since she is food motivated, we play "kibble fetch", and I say each time, "Kitty! Fetch!" when she has caught my eye or hand, and I roll/toss a kibble bit for her. I think she's getting the idea that when I say "Kitty!" she should see what I'm up to, but it's still very inconsistent...
Teaching her her name. Tips and tricks, anyone?
