Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and dealing with roundworms for the first time. We adopted a second cat 3 months a go. Oli is 2 years old and they treated him for everything at the vet before we adopted him. However, the past two months he has started throwing up his food and his stools smell unbearable. I didn't think anything of it and decided to start him on a sensitive system cat food. It worked for a few days but then he started throwing up liquid. I figured it was because he was eating too fast and it was making him sick. I'm a stay at home mom so I catch him every time he throws up and he never had worms come out. However, this evening he threw up twice and the second time he threw up 4 huge worms. I freaked out. I've never dealt with worms and my other cat named Minnie, I've had for 11 years, has never had worms. They are both indoor cats only. The only time Oli has been outside is when he escapes when we open the door. Of course, he goes exploring before no more than a few minutes before I catch him and put him back inside. Money is tight and I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars at the vet but I can't lose my babies. I'm also worried Minnie has them too because they share the. same litter box. She hasn't had any symptoms yet. Tonight I have separated them and they are using separate litter boxes. I know for sure they're roundworms because I've been researching this all night long. I need advice please! Has anyone had any positive results with over the counter medicine for roundworms? I'd like to go to Petsmart or Petco since they have stronger products than Walmart. Also, I have small children and I'm concerned for their health. I'm a clean freak so I clean my house everyday and they don't have access to the litter box but I'm still paranoid that they will get sick. Please help this freaked out momma!

Do NOT use any over the counter medications on your cats.  Get them to the vet and have them treated ASAP.

I took them today and the vet said they either have roundworm or hookworm. Either way, they are now on medication for a month then we go back to see if it's still present. Does anyone know how long it will take before they'lll start throwing up after taking their dosage of Pyrantel liquid?
