I have 2 very sweet adult female cats, medium hair, claws in tact. I've had them since kittens. Atari is all black, 13 yo. Sega is a brown tabby, 11 yo. I have decided I need to find new homes for them. I have severe depression/anxiety and am in therapy currently. A major source of stress in my life is cleaning after the cats. With a desire to sell my condo and move out state, finding my cats better homes feels like the right thing to do. I will provide funds for exchange of their housing and care. I hope they will have a cleaner home

Hi! As you may know, finding adult cats (especially senior cats) a home is almost impossible, especially if you want them to stay together.  It would also probably be traumatic for them at their advanced age to be separated from you.  I hear you about your mental health issues, but you have been taking care of these animals for over a decade despite these issues.  Is there really no way you can keep them? Cleaning up after cats really isn't that time consuming- even scooping twice daily doesn't take more than 5 minutes, and if you cat proof the house, there isn't much damage they can do beyond that.

I hope you will reconsider and keep getting therapy, which will hopefully help you to reach a better place where taking care of the cats is easier.  I think it is possible (though I am not a therapist, admittedly) that the issue is not actually the cats, but your thought processes, and that getting rid of them would not ultimately help, but just make you feel guilty in the long run.

Good luck.

I agree with this completely.  And it has been proven that animals HELP people.  Have you discussed this with your therapist?  If not, I really think you should.

There is no reason (that I can see) why you could not sell your Condo and move, taking your furkids with you.  They don't necessarily need a cleaner home, as you put it, they just need you to take care of them, and them to take care of you, as has been the case the the last several year.  You're a little family

My sister suffers from ocd so I know that these feelings are totally irrational but so hard to control - just the same as anxiety. I totally sympathise.

I hope the therapy helps and you are able to keep your girls and if not that you get a great home for them.

Good luck x

Are you presently considered disabled or on disability for your issues?

You might considering looking into whether you are eligible for home and community based services.  If you are, you might be able to get help from state programs that would provide you with help maintaining your environment, which would include helping you keep your place cleaner and help with maintaining your pets.
